Last week the Wayne Bulldogs won the Consolation in the Mill Creek tournament.

They started tournament play with a 15-1 win over Healdton.

Sloan Jackson and Jaxon Dill had two hits apiece. Dill also had four RBIs.

“We came out to play and hit the ball well. We did what we should have done; we played our game and played well,” head coach Shane Collins said.

The Bulldogs finshed the game with eight stolen bases.

Their next game, an 8-1 loss to Vanoss, was another story.

“We never found our groove and could not get out hitters going. We did not play like we should have.”

Braden McClendon had Wayne’s lone hit and scored their lone run in the fifth inning.

It was “pitch by committee” in the loss as McClendon, Dill and Ty Kemp all saw time on the mound.

“We should have won this game and it would have set us good for the championship game, but we just couldn’t get anything going,” Collins said.

That loss sent Wayne to the consolation side of the bracket where they got a 12-1 over Wapanucka.

“We hit the ball well and pitched well. Wyatt’s homerun in the first inning was the spark to get us going,” Collins said.

The Bulldogs scored 12 runs on five hits. Kemp led his team with two hits. Wyatt Webster finshed with three RBIs thanks to his three-run shot in the first.

The Bulldogs also racked up 13 stolen bases.

Dill was on the mound for three innings. He struck out six and allowed one run on one hit.

In the consolation championship, Wayne beat Achille 11-3.

The Bulldogs scored 11 runs on 14 hits. Dill had three hits and four ribbies. Ben Fisher, Logan Taylor, Jackson and Kemp each had two hits.

McClendon was on the mound for the win. He pitched five innings and struck out 11 batters.

“Braden threw well for us. And, Jaxon was hitting well. We played great in the consolation game,” Collins said.

Once again, the Bulldogs were aggressive on the basepaths, finishing the game with 13 stolen bases.

“Overall we’ve been more aggressive on the basepaths, which I like to see. I think we’re getting more confident and definitely more aggressive on the bases.”

Tuesday night, Wayne was in Wewoka.

Next Wednesday starts District play for Wayne. They will be in Union City with the Tigers and Southwest Covenant.

“We got a decent draw. If we go and play hard and smart, we have a good chance,” Collins said.
