Posted

The Wayne Bulldogs got wins over Ringling (66-31), Healdton (61-50) and Wynnewood (55-30) in the championship game to win the Bulldog Bash.

Jaxon Dill and Wyatt Webster were named to the All-Tournament team. Webster finished the tournament with 63 points through three games and Dill finished with 56.

“I’m proud of our defense. Overall we played well – for 10 of 12 quarters – and the timing is good to be playing our best basketball,” head coach Jackson Embry said.

Wayne scored the first eight points against Wynnewood and never looked back.

At halftime they held a 23-13 lead, a closer game than it had been thanks to a couple Wynnewood three pointers late in the second quarter.

A 12-1 run opened the third quarter for Wayne. They scored 16 points and held Wynnewood to just 10 going into the final stanza.

Wayne outscored Wynnewood 16-7 in the final eight  minutes to get the championship game win.

Webster (23), Ty Kemp (15) and Dill (12) all finished in double figures. Ben Fisher added five.

Healdton

Another dominating performance for the Bulldogs. Wayne jumped out to a 34-13 halftime lead.

Things got interesting in the second half as Healdton outscored Wayne 16-10 in the third quarter and 21-17 in the fourth. But, they weren’t able to overcome the large lead Wayne had already built.

“This was a back and forth game and in the second half we were more playing not to lose than playing to win. We should have been playing our basketball game.”

Wayne won 61-50.

Dill led all scorers with 26 points. Webster had a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Fisher added nine points.

Ringling

Wayne kicked off the Bulldogs Bash with a 66-31 win over Ringling. Three guys were in double figures led by Webster’s 24 points. Dill and Kemp each added 15.

It was an overall dominating game for Wayne. The Bulldogs led 36-23 at halftime and outscored Ringling 30-8 in the final two quarters.

Wayne was scheduled to be at Dibble on Tuesday, at Asher on Thursday.

“Our games this week will be tough. Dibble is always a rivalry game and Asher is well-coached by Lee Reimer. I have a ton of respect for him,” Embry said.

Wayne will host Konawa on Friday for Homecoming. The ceremony will start at 6 p.m.

Girls

The Lady Bulldogs lost a close one to Ringling on Thursday, 47-41, in their first game of the Bulldog Bash.

Freshman Taelyn Ringwald and senior Faith Brazell combined for 35 points in the loss.

The scored was tied at 23-all at the break.

Ringling outscored Wayne 24-18 in the final 16 minutes to pick up the win.

“We scrimmaged Ringling over the break and they really put it to us. And we knew we would have to play hard. We were up four late in the game and we just made some mistakes. They closed the gap and hit a buzzer-beater to win by six,” head coach Embry said.

Temple

Wayne was led by Brazell’s 13 points and Madi Sharp’s 11 in their 46-21 win over Temple.

Audra Watts and Ringwald both finished with eight points. Watts also had 11 rebounds and Ringwald had 10.

“Madi Sharp really stepped up in the Temple game when others were having an off night. She and Faith played well in the win.”

The Lady Bulldogs held a 35-7 halftime lead and never looked back.

They were outscored in the fourth quarter, 9-1, but the game was firmly in their control by then.

Wynnewood

A tight first-half made for an exciting Consolation game. Wayne led 25-20 at halftime. They outscored Wynnewood 25-16 in the final two quarters to beat the Lady Savages 50-36.

Ringwald was the leading scorer with 22 points. Brazell added nine points, Watts had eight and Sharp had seven.

“Taelyn is starting to understand that when she gets open she gets things going for us. And the rest of our team is getting better at working to get the ball to Taelyn.

“In the second half, she went to work and we picked up the win.”

Brazell also had 12 rebounds, while Watts and Sharp had seven apiece.

Ringwald was named to the All-Tournament team.

The Lady Bulldogs were scheduled to be in Dibble on Tuesday and Asher on Thursday.

“Both Dibble and Asher are ranked so we’ll have to play tough and be patient offensively,” Embry said.

They will host Konawa on Friday. Homecoming festivities will start at 6 p.m.
