Memorial services for Jean Champeau, 96, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, January 29, 2024 at the Wilson-Little Funeral Home Chapel. Services will be under the direction of the Wilson-Little Funeral Home in Purcell.

Mrs. Champeau, storyteller, bread maker, mother and grandmother died January 1, 2024.

A lover of stories, Jean made up countless stories for her three grandchildren and read them many more besides. She read also for her own enjoyment, reading late into the night devouring whole books in single sittings.

As many stories could be told about her. She used her late-night reading ability to help her friend Joaquin Giron study to earn US citizenship. She said her parents “spoiled” her even as they endured the hardships of the great depression and the Oklahoma Dust Bowl.

She stayed up too late, drove her car too fast, ate peppers too hot, played old time country music too loud, and survived decades on a diet of chocolate, bacon and diet soda. She might still be alive if the Coca Cola Company hadn’t discontinued Tab.

She is survived by her daughter, Louise; her three grandchildren, Jacques, Brandi, and Monique, and her great-grandchildren Astrid and Blake.
