Warriors punch ticket to State for 27th consecutive season

The Washington slow-pitch softball team defeated Stilwell 9-0 and Perkins-Tryon 11-1 in the Regional tournament to earn a berth to the State tournament.

This continues an incredible streak of 14 consecutive slow-pitch seasons to make State and 27 seasons total when fast pitch is included.

Idabel

The State tournament was held at USA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City. Washington opened the tournament with a 12-0 opening-round win over Idabel Tuesday.

Washington opened the scoring with a run scored in the second inning.

They put four on the board in the third, one run in the fourth and six runs in the fifth.

Ava Salcedo and Shelbie Caveness both tripled.

Cache

Salcedo homered in her first at-bat to drive in two runs to get Washington rolling on offense.

Reese Schrader also had a home run in the game.

The game was tied at three when Washington scored four in the third and another four in the fourth to take command of the game.

They didn’t allow Cache to match them and held them scoreless the rest of the game.

The tournament was still in progress as of press time Tuesday.

Regionals

The Warriors began their chase for the State tournament with a 9-0 win over Stilwell.

Washington’s defense and pitching output seemed more reminiscent of a fast-pitch game than a slow-pitch game.

Senior pitcher Alexis Gay went down in the books with pitching a perfect game.

“It’s the first time I’ve been a part of that in slow pitch,” quipped head coach Tylor Lampkin.

The defense behind Gay was of course a big part of the game’s outcome.

The Warriors were error-free in the field and made some great plays to keep the Indians from reaching base in the game.

“Good defense helps with that,” Lampkin confirmed. “We were able to track down balls in the field and had some pretty good plays out there.”

Washington got on the board in the first inning when Emjay Lucas blasted a two-run shot.

She homered again in the third inning and finished the day 2-2 with four RBIs. She was also intentionally walked twice.

Salcedo and Halle Andrews also homered in the game.

Schrader and Caveness both had doubles.

Perkins-Tryon

Washington’s game against Perkins-Tryon was a back-loaded offensive contest.

The game was scoreless until the fourth inning when Washington hung six runs on the board.

Perkins scored their lone run in that inning.

Palumbo got the inning started with a two-run homer. She finished 2-3 with three RBIs.

The Warriors scored five more in the fifth inning.

Emjay Lucas started that inning with a two-run homer. She was 2-3 with two RBIs.
