Senior Night turned out to be just what the doctor ordered for Wayne’s fast-pitch softball team.
The Lady Bulldogs, who left 24 runners in scoring position in three losses last week, didn’t strand many against Bray-Doyle on Monday in a 22-4 win.
The game was called after the Donkeys batted in the third inning.
Maddie Moreno hit a triple and a double and drove in four runs for Wayne (15-13-1), which scored 14 runs in the first inning to snap a six-game skid.
The scoring barrage was a welcome sight for coach Megan Moreno, whose team left seven runners in scoring position and committed four errors in an 8-7 loss to Elmore City-Pernell September 14.
Wayne left seven runners in scoring position and committed two errors the next day in a 12-8 loss to Turner. Against Central September 18, the Lady Bulldogs left 10 runners in scoring position and committed three errors in a 4-3 loss.
“We have not been playing well,” Moreno told The Register. “We are getting some good hits, but we aren’t able to push those runs across the plate.”
The Lady Bulldogs need to snap out of their slump pretty quick, or their season could be over by the end of the week.
A final regular-season game was scheduled for Tuesday at Union City, and Wayne returns home to host districts Thursday and Friday. The double-elimination tournament includes Mill Creek and Turner.
“In order for our season to continue, we have to win games this week,” Megan Moreno said.
There was some good news to come out of Wayne’s recent disappointment. Pitcher Natalie Knobloch recorded her 100th career strikeout versus Elmore City; Taelyn Ringwald picked up the 100th hit of her career against Central. Maddie Moreno also collected her 100th hit.
