Senior night didn’t go according to plan for Cameron Davis, Ben Fisher, Sloan Jackson and Max McGlory on Monday night.
Wayne’s four senior starters got blitzed early by Amber-Pocasset, which forced seven turnovers in the game’s first three minutes and ran out to a 15-0 lead.
The only highlight for Wayne up until that point was sophomore Brody Kemp’s chase- down block of a lay up attempt.
A shot by Fisher made it 15-2, but things only got worse from there.
Amber-Pocasset outscored the Bulldogs 11 to 3 to make it 26-5.
Wayne’s final game of the regular season ended with a 76-38 loss.
The Panthers’ Kaleb Vasquez led all scorers with 37 points, including 20 in the first quarter.
“They punched in the mouth early and we didn’t have an answer for it,” Wayne coach Jackson Embry told The Register. “Usually, we’re the ones throwing the first punch. But they threw it and we did not know how to respond.”
Wayne shot nearly 50% from the field (17 of 35), but the Bulldogs average twice as many shots per game, Embry said.
“To shoot half of what we usually shoot is a lot of respect to what they did defensively,” he said. “They got after us defensively.”
Amber-Pocasset forced 38 turnovers, including 15 in the third quarter when the Panthers outscored Wayne 20-2.
“That’s by far the most turnovers I’ve ever had,” Embry said. “We had seven turnovers to start the game and seven turnovers to start the third quarter. “It’s super uncharacteristic and it’s not good for us during the playoffs.”
The teams played with a running clock the rest of the way.
Fisher led the Bulldogs (11-11) with 15 points.
The postseason gets underway on Saturday night for Wayne, which plays Hydro-Eakly in an Area II district game at Hydro-Eakly at 7:30.
Win and the Bulldogs play the winner of Canute and Snyder on Tuesday in a first-round Regionals game at Canute. Lose and the team plays again Thursday. Second- and third-round games will be played at Southwest Covenant.
Girls
The Lady Bulldogs didn’t fare much better against Class A No. 4 Amber-Pocasset, which cruised to a 60-21 win.
“They’re a State tournament team for sure,” Embry said of the Lady Panthers.
The last 12 minutes of the game were played with a running clock.
“They’re that kind of measuring stick for us since we don’t graduate anybody,” Embry said. “So, they’re that kind of team that showed our girls ‘hey, that’s where we’ve got to get to.’”
Amber-Pocasset led 26-7 after one quarter and 46-15 at halftime. The Lady Panthers had a noticeable size advantage and used it to secure offensive rebounds and extend possessions.
Embry is looking ahead to the postseason.
“We’ll watch film and break down what we did right and what we did wrong and really take away some good things that they did and see what we can put into ours,” he said.
“After all, we are 0-0 now and in the playoffs.”
The postseason also begins for the Lady Bulldogs (11-12) on Saturday night. Wayne plays Hydro-Eakly at 6 p.m. The scenario is the same for the girls’ team as it is for the boys’ team.
