Bounce back to knock off Purcell 42-25

After feeling like they gave away a loss at Sulphur the previous Friday night, Washington bounced back by pinning a 42-25 loss on Purcell last Friday night at Conger Field.

Led by their offensive line, the Warriors rushed for over 10 yards a carry and had a pair of 100 yard rushers.

Sophomore Josiah Dickerson carried the mail 11 times for 148 yards and three touchdowns and also was on the receiving end of a 64-yard pass for a score off the arm of sophomore quarterback Creed Barrett.

Dickerson’s rushing scores were on runs of five, nine and 14 in the contest.

Freshman Javen Hall also carried the ball 11 times for 123 yards including a six yard burst for a touchdown in the first quarter.

Paving the way for the potent rushing attack were six different linemen that rotated during the game including Kingston Stringer, Sam Cantrell, Chance Phillips, Evan Painter, Gunnar Baker and Trip Wilson.

“Our offensive line did a great job,” head coach Brad Beller said. “Any time you can rush for over 10 yards a pop you are doing an excellent job.

“That really was the biggest difference in the game,” Beller continued. “We were hit or miss throwing the ball. Once we get all of our offense down, our best games are ahead of us. Anytime you can run the ball it makes it tough for the opposing team.”

On the defensive side of the ball, Beller said he had several players play well against the Dragons.

Case Alexander, Jaaron Gordon and Blake Heiliger all had eight tackles to lead the team.

Alexander didn’t stop there, however. The junior linebacker registered two tackles for losses and blocked an extra point and blocked a field goal attempt in the game.

“Those three players played really well but the unsung hero of the game for us was Lane Taylor,” the coach said. “He took on double and triple team blocks that allowed our linebackers and secondary guys to fill well.”

Safety Kinzer Scott had seven tackles in the game.

“Sometimes it’s bad for your safety to make a bunch of tackles,” Beller said. “But with Purcell’s option game, he did a good job defending the run.”

Warrior notes:

Washington has a bye this Friday night giving players that are a bit nicked up from minor injuries time to heal.

Head Coach Brad Beller nominated Josiah Dickerson as the Offensive Player of the Week. Dickerson carried the pigskin 11 times for 148 yards and three touchdowns and caught a touchdown pass.

Beller nominated Sam Cantrell as the Offensive Lineman of the Week. He graded out at 78 percent against Purcell.

Getting the nod as the Defensive Player of the Week was Case Alexander. Alexander tied for game high tackles with eight including two behind the line of scrimmage. He also blocked an extra point and blocked a field goal.

The Defensive Lineman of the Week nominee went to Ricky Ramirez who finished with seven tackles.
