Washington controlled the first half and Marlow the second but the Warriors prevailed in overtime to post a 35-28 victory, their second overtime win of the season.

“It really was a game of momentum changes,” head coach Brad Beller said. “We’d get it then they would get it. We were able to fill i and make enough plays in overtime to keep them from scoring and come out with a big win.”

Beller started off raving about the defensive play of junior linebacker Blake Heiliger who was all over the field. He finished with a dozen tackles.

“Blake Heiliger had the best game of his career,” Beller said. “We knew they were going to put him in spaced to make plays and attack the run box. Blake is very disciplined. I’m really, really proud of the way he played,” Beller said. “Our two other linebackers Case Alexander and Kale Brakefield made plays in the run game and provided pass coverage.

Alexander finished with nine tackles while Brakefield had seven stops. Kane Lampkin also had seven tackles. Kash Guthmueller finished with five tackles and had an interception. Dawson Thomas also had an interception to go with his three tackles.

“Both of our two safeties, Kash and Dawson, came up with big interceptions and had timely pass breakups,” Beller said.

Freshman quarterback Creed Barrett passed for 232 yards and a trio of touchdowns and he ran the rock in from 10 yards out in the overtime period to secure the victory.

Hitting six different receivers, Barrett was 20-28.

“He was very effective and showed the poise of a veteran. A lot of that poise was because the offensive line did a great job of pass protecting for him,” the coach said.

Barrett’s favorite target was sophomore Case Alexander who finished with seven receptions for 87 yards and a touchdown.

His scoring catch opened the scoring in the second quarter with a 10-yards off the arm of Barrett.

Barrett also tossed a five-yard scoring strike to Hudson Howard and a 26 yarder to Nate Roberts all in the second period.

Howard added a seven yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

“A majority of our passing game revolved around Mason Singletary going one-on-one. He finished with six snags for 68 yards. Roberts and Kade Babcock both finished with a trio of catches.

“Using Hudson Howard out of the backfield was a big weapon for us,” the coach said. “We used the run game to set up the passing game. But the line gave Hudson just enough creases.”

The Warriors rushed the pigskin 25 times for 114 yards and the two scores.

“Our run game wasn’t as effective as we wanted,” the coach admitted.

The Warriors hope to turn that around when they visit Lexington Friday night for a 7 p.m. league contest..

“They run the spread on offense but they are very multiple,” Beller said of the Bulldogs, who are 3-4 on the season.

On defense they sometimes base out of a three-man front and sometimes a four-man front.

“They are very multiple on defense as well,” the coach said.

“The key for us is to make sure we get aligned on defense and be able to run the ball on offense,” Beller confirmed.

Warrior notes:

Washington has now won 37 straight games.

Head coach Brad Beller nominated Case Alexander as the Offensive Player of the Week for his seven receptions for  87 yards and a touchdown against Marlow.

Blake Heiliger was nominated as the Defensive Player of the Week. He had 12 tackles against the Outlaws.

Jaxon Byrd was nominated as the Offensive Lineman of the Week. He graded out at 75 percent.

There was no nomination for Defensive Lineman of the Week.
