Mother Nature still undefeated

A wild week of winter weather resulted in the Rocky Clarke Invitational Washington Tournament being postponed from last week to this week.

The Washington girls are now scheduled to play in the finals of the tournament today (Thursday) at 3:40 p.m. against Class 4A No. 2 Broken Bow.

The boys will play in the consolation championship at 7:40 p.m. Both games will be played in the Warrior Event Center.

Junior high games scheduled against Marlow for that day have been moved to the Larry J. McAlister Field House.

The girls defeated Casady (70-22) in the opening round of the tournament.

Warrior head coach Kale Simon said he liked some of the things he saw from his team.

“We’ve had some stretches where we’ve done well with taking care of things,” he said. “I’m pleased with the habits we’re creating but we need to keep the big picture in mind. The hardest part of my job right now is keeping whatever we deem important that we accept in victory, we have to accept it in defeat as well.”

Washington opened with an impressive first quarter, out scoring Casady 24-9.

They followed that up with a 19-2 second quarter and led 43-11 at halftime.

Aubri Clary led the way in scoring with 15 points.

Bentli Brantley was also in double figures with 12 points.

Elk City

They played Elk City in the next round and took a 67-21 victory.

They again used a big first quarter to take all the momentum in the gym, out scoring the Elks 23-5.

But Simon was unhappy with their second quarter play and they took a 38-15 advantage into halftime.

“We came out and had a great first quarter, but relaxed and let down in the second quarter on defense,” he said. “The second half our habits were what we’d like them to be. The level and standards were there.”

Brantley scored a game-high 25 points.

Jayden Wells added 12 and Kelby Beller was right behind her with 11 points.

Simon is pleased with the effort his team plays with.

“For the most we’re playing extremely hard and that covers up a lot of technical area,” Simon said. “The effort always takes care of a lot of things.”

Broken Bow

Broken Bow is 17-1 this season and were winners of the  Choctaw Nation Invitational Tournament.

“This will be a good test to see where our habits have put us,” Simon said.

Washington is 15-1 this season.

Boys

The Warrior boys dropped their first game of the tournament to Sulphur, 49-41.

Jack McKimmey led the scoring charge with 19 points.

Cole Beard was in double figures as well with 12 points.

Washington got out to an early lead and led 18-14 at halftime.

They led by two points after the second quarter but were outscored 12-7 in each of the next two periods.

Elk City

Washington righted the ship in the next round against Elk City and took home the 58-43 win.

The Warriors took Elk City’s best shot in the first quarter and were down 17-8 early.

They battled back in the second quarter and cut it to a one-point deficit at halftime.

Washington came out of the halftime locker room juiced up and put it on the Elks to establish a 13-point lead.

McKimmey had a team-high 17 points and Beard scored 16 of his own.

The Warriors play Cache at 7:40 p.m. tonight (Thursday).

Washington is 6-10 this season.
