Both Washington basketball teams picked up wins over rival Purcell on January 7.

Coach Kale Simon’s girls team walked away with a 61-50 victory in the first game.

The coach felt like his team lacked focus at times but made the necessary plays to take the win.

“When we needed to we did things the right way,” he said. “We bonded together to do what we needed to win.”

The Warriors came out in the first quarter and took a commanding 25-14 lead. They remained in control for much of the game.

The second quarter was dead even with each team scoring 11 points.

Washington’s halftime adjustments proved beneficial when they outscored the Dragons by six points in the third quarter.

“Before the game we were focused and then at halftime we refocused,” Simon said. “We need to keep that focus and not rely on a group setting to get it.”

Breanna Lindert was a monster in the paint and led all scorers with 21 points.

Kelby Beller joined her in double figures with 16 points.

The Warriors (10-1) are the No. 1 ranked team in Class 3A and host Bridge Creek on Tuesday in front of a homecoming crowd.

They then host the Rocky Clarke Invitational tournament beginning Thursday.

Boys

The Washington boys traveled to the Marilyn Jo Franz Invitational tournament in Ripley.

The tournament was a bit disjointed due to winter weather that moved through the area on Thursday and the tournament didn’t end up playing out until Monday.

Washington opened with an 80-26 win over Newkirk on Wednesday.

Jack McKimmey led the Warriors in scoring with 13 points.

Mason Adams and Jax Mitchell both scored 12, followed by Teagen Foster with 10.

When Washington was able to play Ripley on Saturday they were without the services of leading rebounder Teagen Foster and were defeated 65-61.

“He’s a big part of what we do,” head coach Trevor Smith said. “He’s our leading rebounder and brings a lot of toughness.”

Cooper Collins led the team in scoring with 20.

McKimmey joined him in double figures with 13.

The Warriors then traveled back on Monday where they took on Kellyville where they fell 50-47.

“We competed really hard,” Smith said. “We had a shot at the end before the buzzer but we just didn’t have quite enough.”

McKimmey again led the Warriors in scoring with 15.

Purcell

Washington defeated Purcell 64-62 January 7 in an overtime thriller.

“They’re a rival and it’s going to be a close game,” Smith said. “Anytime you can go into each other’s gym and walk away with a win you’ll take it.”

Collins led the Warriors on offense with 18 points. Adams and McKimmey each scored 13 in the game.

The Warriors had a chance to put the game away before overtime but couldn’t capitalize at the line.

“I wish we would have made some free throws and ended it in regulation.”

The Warriors are 8-3 and ranked No. 8 in Class 3A. They host Bridge Creek Tuesday before the Rocky Clarke Invitational on Thursday.
