The Wayne Bulldogs were scheduled to play in the Graham-Dustin tournament last weekend. But, the tournament was canceled due to winter weather. Head coach Jackson Embry picked up a game with Macomb on Saturday and the Bulldogs won handily, 74-55.
“We started off slow defensively but our offense was clicking,” Embry said.
Up 50-29 at halftime, the Wayne offense continued to outscore Macomb in the third quarter.
“It’s always our goal to hold the opponent to under 40 points. Our top 8 guys did that and in the fourth quarter we were able to get some other bench players in for playing time. Macomb closed the gap in the fourth quarter, but I was happy to get everyone in to play,” Embry said.
Ty Kemp led his team with a double-double, 31 points and 19 rebounds. Jaxon Dill added 23 points.
Last Tuesday, Wayne hosted local foe Lexington and lost a close one, 50-49.
“We led 16-12 at the end of the first quarter, but I’ve noticed a trend that our scoring dips in the second quarter and that happened to us again.
“They did a good job of stopping our penetration and Lexington got their shooting going in the second quarter. That second quarter really put us in a bind the rest of the game.”
Lexington outscored Wayne 14-7 in the second quarter.
The Wayne defense stepped up and held the Lexington guards to fewer shots as Wayne chipped away and tied it up at the end of three.
Dill’s shooting came alive in the fourth and, according to the coach, hit some clutch threes.
“Jaxon came alive for us, but they clamped down on Ben Fisher, holding him in check and forcing some costly turnovers,” Embry said.
Those uncharacteristic misses and the physical defense from Lexington led to the one-point Wayne loss.
Kemp led his team with 14 points and 17 rebounds, another double-double. Dill and Fisher joined him in double figures with 13 and 10, respectively.
Wayne was set to travel to Davis on Tuesday and host Stratford for Homecoming on Friday.
Girls
The Wayne Lady Bulldogs picked up a game with Macomb on Saturday after the Graham-Dustin tournament was canceled.
They dropped a close one, 39-32.
“It felt like we were scared to shoot. We are struggling to put the ball in the hole -- missing bumps from close range and missing free throws,” head coach Jackson Embry said.
“Our defense played well and held them below 40, and held their best scorer under 20.”
Sophomore Taelyn Ringwald scored 13 points, Audra Watts added nine and Addison Keeler had four.
Last Tuesday was another close loss at the hands of the Lexington Lady ‘Dawgs, 36-33.
According to Embry, it was a defensive battle and once again his post players were missing close-range shots. No team hit a three.
“We left a lot of points on the board. I’m pleased with our defense, but we have to have the offense step us and start closing out games,” Embry said.
Ringwald led the Lady Bulldogs with 15 points. Dakota Martin had eight.
Wayne was scheduled to be in Davis on Tuesday and host Stratford on Friday. Homecoming festivities will start at 6 p.m. Friday night.
