Purcell is hosting the Class 5A Regional 7.
Joining the Dragons are Marlow and Harrah.
Purcell earned a bye in the first game and were to face the winner of Marlow and Harrah at 2 p.m. Wednesday.
The championship game will be played today (Thursday) at 2 p.m. with the if necessary game at 4 p.m. Thursday.
Purcell’s Dragons finished unblemished in fast-pitch district competition with a 14-0 record.
They polished off Plainview last Tuesday 16-2 in the district championship showdown and finished the district play with an 8-2 victory over Byng.
The regular season finished with a blemish, however when they traveled to Lone Grove Monday and were blanked 4-0, striking out 18 times and making three errors.
“We came out ready to play against Plainview,” head coach Sarah Jones said. “We did our job of putting the ball in play and making them make errors.
“We had good at-bats, getting six walks, and had hits with runners in scoring position,” the coach said.
The offense was topped by a grand slam by freshman Maica Martinez in the second inning.
“We continued scoring runs each inning to seal the win and the District Championship,” Jones said.
Hadleigh Harp led the offense going 3-3 at the plate. Ella Resendiz was 2-2 with two walks while striking out nine in the circle. KK Vazquez went 2-3.
“It was a great game,” Jones concluded.
Hannah Whitaker had the hot bat in the Byng victory going 3-5 with an RBI. Resendiz, Martin and Harp all went 2-4. Resendiz had two RBIs with a double while Harp and Martin had one each.
Ava Sparks and Resendiz combined to toss a three-hitter while the Dragons were pounding out a dozen hits.
“We started off a little rocky but finally woke up in the fifth,” the coach said.
That’s when Purcell pushed across four runs. They added a pair in the sixth and easily won their 14th district contest.
“It was a good game to end the week and the district season,” Jones said.
“Monday against Lone Grove we flat-out didn’t come out ready to play,” Jones confirmed. “We didn’t make adjustments at the plate and when you have the same unsuccessful approach at the plate every time we aren’t successful.
“We learned and I know that we grew from that game. Our mentality switched after and we know that we are ready to be a completely different team come Wednesday for Regionals,” she said.
Purcell finished the regular season 21-10.
