Last week, the Lexington Lady ‘Dawgs played four games. They opened the second half of the season with a 36-33 win over Wayne then played three games in the Arbuckle Classic.

They lost an overtime thriller with Ringling, 45-44, won a decisive game against Little Axe, 55-26, then lost to Roff in the consolation game, 55-44.

Arbuckle Classic

Due to winter weather and snowy conditions games were moved up to Wednesday then played Saturday and Monday.

The Ringling game was a tight game with Lexington making a late push to send it to overtime.

“The girls played hard and despite the loss it was a good game for us,” head coach Jacobi Couch said.

Leading scorer Addison Lippel got a cut over her eye and had to leave to get stitches with less than a minute left in the game.

“Lippel got hurt and we had to play the final 40 seconds without her. She’s our engine, and we battled hard but couldn’t get over the edge without her.”

She had 22 points in the loss.

The win over Little Axe was a good team win, according to Couch.

“We were able to jump on them early and put them away. We’ve been focusing on getting out of the gate quickly and the girls did just that against Little Axe.”

Three Lady Bulldogs were in double figures, led by Lippel’s 19. Lexie Torres was hot on her heels with 17 and Dulce Rodriguez added 10.

They played in the consolation game on Monday against Roff and fell 55-44.

“We’re small, but we rebounded the heck out of the ball. We played hard and the game was closer than the score looks,” Couch said.

Wayne

Last Tuesday Lexington traveled to Wayne and picked up a three-point, 36-33 win.

“It was good for us to be in a scrappy match with a team that played hard. It was neck and neck and we made the plays to win.”

Lippel finished with 17 points. Torres added eight and McClain Moore and Dulce Rodriguez had four points each.

Lexington was scheduled to play Marietta on Tuesday. They will host Wynnewood next Tuesday for Homecoming. Coronation will start at 6 p.m.

Boys

The Lexington Bulldogs picked up a 50-49 win over Wayne last Tuesday then were in Davis for the Arbuckle Classic.

In their first game, moved to Wednesday due to impending winter weather, Lexington beat Marietta 76-56.

“That was the best we’ve looked all year. The score was tight after the first quarter and we started to pull away in the second and then we came out in the third and really poured it on,” head coach Derek Clark said.

Cash Dierking finished the game with 27 points, including seven three-pointers. Elijah Pearman had 22.

“It was good to see the guys shooting like that; we haven’t shot the ball that well all year.”

They played again on Saturday, and dropped their second game of the tournament, a 69-51 loss to Velma-Alma.

“Velma is a really good, ranked team,” Clark said.

Lexington was down just three after the first quarter and eight at halftime. They came out in the third and outscored Velma 9-7.

“We boxed their best player in the third quarter and played our best ball then. I felt like we had a chance, but they had some other guys step up and score for them and pulled away,” Clark said.

Dierking and Mixon had 13 apiece while Pearman added eight. Reagan Smith and Reece Beason each had five points.

In their final game of the tournament on Monday, Lexington lost to Little Axe 62-49.

“Little Axe is a solid team. They got after full court and got in our grill. They got us to turn it over and take bad shots. Credit to them,” Clark said.

Little Axe had a 38-24 halftime lead. Lexington chipped away and cut the lead to nine in the fourth quarter, but could not pull out the win.

“I think after playing five games in seven days our legs were just tired. We could have played better but that was a factor in the game with Little Axe.”

Pearman was Lexington’s leading scorer with 16 points. Mixon joined him in double figures with 14. Dierking and Gavrie Williams added six points each.

The Bulldogs were scheduled to be in Marietta on Tuesday. They host Wynnewood next Tuesday for Homecoming. Coronation is set for 6 p.m.
