Funeral services for Leona Davenport, 80, of Wayne were held Tuesday, March 12, 2024 at the Wilson-Little Funeral Home Chapel. Interment was at the Hopping Cemetery in Wayne under the direction of the Wilson-Little Funeral Home in Purcell.
Mrs. Davenport passed away peacefully at her home on March 5, 2024.
Leona Marie Weeden was born on August 18, 1943 in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma, to Dallas Lafayette Weeden and Cora Lee Weeden (Mooney). She grew up in the area attending Whitebead School and later, Pauls Valley High School.
By chance, Leona met a young man at the drive-in named Jake Davenport and they quickly fell in love. Leona and Jake were married on August 5, 1960, starting their family soon after. In 1969, they moved to Wayne and called it home ever since.
Leona raised her family, then began working outside the home with great success. Leona was a bold, bright businesswoman owning several businesses during the 80s, 90s and early 2000s. For a time, she owned a bar in Wayne, “Jinks”, then moved on to the convenience store business owning Tom’s in Wayne and later the Slaughterville Store. She worked seven days a week in these stores - and loved it!
In her later years, she enjoyed spending time with her kids, and watching soap operas and basketball on T.V. Leona had a generous heart, always willing to help those in need. She was a treasured mother, grandmother, and friend. She will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved her.
Leona was preceded in death by her parents, Dallas Weeden and Cora Jarnigan; her husband, Jake Davenport; her son, David Davenport; her grandson, Brian Lane and her siblings, Irene Songer and Clifford Weeden.
She is survived by her daughters, Jeanne Birkes and husband, Roland, of Wayne and Ronnie Davenport of Wayne; her five grandchildren, Amy White and husband, Noah, David Davenport and wife, Stormy, Macy Davenport, Larrison Stevens, Jake Stevens and Kristie Greb and husband, Daniel; great-grandchildren, Kailey, Rya, Raylee, Rowdy, Emersyn, Charlie, Max and Violet and two great-great-grandchildren, Paisley and Kamdyn.
