Dragons travel to Kingfisher

Kick off set for 7 p.m. Friday

Purcell jumps from the frying pan into the fire this week with a road trip to Kingfisher Friday night at 7 p.m.

After last Friday’s lopsided 40-10 loss to Plainview,  the Dragons will face the always potent  Yellowjackets for a key district showdown.

Kingfisher, who operates out of a spread offense, lost a heartbreaker to Pauls Valley last week after leading by 18 points with eight minutes to play. The Yellowjackets took Clinton to overtime and played only 4A schools, including Weatherford, in their non-district games hanging in with all three.

“That’s why their 1-3 record is deceiving,” Purcell Head Coach Aaron Dillard said. “We know we are going to get their best crack.

“They have a super talented quarterback that is a dual threat. He has three or four receivers that are as good as you will see,” Dillard continued. “They are athletic and fast. They will spread you out and throw it all over the place.”

Dillard said the Yellowjackets are not their usual run it down your throat type team.

“They are good at what they do,” he confirmed.

Kingfisher operates out of a 4-3 alignment on defense.

Dillard said the Dragons are going to try to limit their explosive plays which includes their quarterback scrambling around and shaking loose.

“We need to keep them behind the chains which will help us in the back end,” the coach said. “If they get in third and short we will have problems. We need to limit their possessions.”

Last Friday night Purcell drove 80 yards in 14 plays on their first possession with Deaken Dobbins legging in for an opening touchdown.

However, a phantom holding penalty nullified the score and Purcell had to settle for a field goal.

They held Plainview on a three and out and once again drove the ball down the field only to cough up a fumble.

“So we had two long sustained drives and only had three points to show for it,” the coach said.

Then the Indians struck for big scoring plays pulling away.

“Our defense gave up big plays,” Dillard said. “It wasn’t a great game defensively. We’ve got to get better.

“The story of the game is what we said turnovers and mistakes is what we couldn’t do,” Dillard said.

Purcell fumbled three times and threw one interception and were penalized nine times for 61 yards.

“They all seemed untimely,” Dillard said. “We had a holding penalty when we had a third and two making it third and 12. It was frustrating. We could have been up 7-0 real quick. We’ve got to do a better job at finishing drives and putting points on the board.

“We’re not playing opportunistic and making way too many mistakes,” Dillard confirmed.

Deaken Dobbins scored the lone touchdown on a 34 yard scamper in the fourth quarter. Devan Martin toed the field goal and a point after touchdown.

“Boston Knowles had another great game rushing 29 times for 135 yards,” Dillard said. “Brian Bernal had a good game at tackle and Landry Bacon played well at both guard and tight end..

“Devan Martin had a pretty good game rushing for 72 yards on seven carries,” the coach said.

Dragon notes:

Purcell Head Coach Aaron Dillard nominated Boston Knowles as the Offensive Player of the Week. Knowles rushed 29 times for 135 yards.

Dillard nominated Brian Bernal as the Offensive Lineman of the Week. Bernal graded out at 84 percent.

There were no nominations on defense.
