Ben Fisher and some of his teammates got an extended break during a lopsided victory against Maysville on December 16.
Fisher and the team’s other starters only played 10 minutes in a 57-30 win.
“It was good for our reserves to get some playing experience in a varsity game,” coach Jackson Embry told the Register.
Fisher led the Bulldogs with 18 points and Langstyn McClendon had 11.
In Friday’s home game against Alex, the Bulldogs led from start to finish in a 58-51 win.
“We never trailed but just couldn’t pull away by more than 10 without Alex hitting big buckets,” Embry said. “It was a really tough and gritty win by our boys.”
Fisher, the team’s leading scorer, finished with 20 points and McClendon added 16 to pace the Wayne attack.
Girls
The Wayne girls trailed No. 17 Maysville for most of their match up, which Embry called “a dog fight.”
The Bulldogs didn’t take their first lead until 1:30 remained, then played suffocating defense to secure a 52-44 win.
Audra Watts and Natalie Knobloch forced eight turnovers in the game’s final two minutes, according to Embry.
“All of our girls played tough ... and super unselfish,” he said.
Watts scored 12 points, Taelyn Ringwald added nine and Knobloch had eight to lead Wayne.
Against No. 11 Alex, the Bulldogs struggled to score in a 47-31 loss.
“We did a superb job defensively and breaking their press but couldn’t buy a bucket, which caused strain on our defense to get a lot of stops,” Embry said. “We played with toughness and good defense.”
The Bulldogs return to action against Verden at home on January 6.
