The Wayne Bulldogs lost their first game of the season last Friday night on the road at Wewoka, 46-20.
“It was one of those games where everything we could do wrong we did. Against a good football team you can’t do that because it’ll get out of hand quick,” head coach Brandon Sharp said.
Wewoka took advantage of Wayne miscues in the first half and raced out to a 18-0 lead after the first frame.
Wayne shot themselves in the foot early in the second quarter with a pick six and allowed an 85 yard run on third and 49.
“We turned the ball over and gave them a short field more than once early in the game,” Sharp said.
“They scored in all phases of the game, pick six, returned a kick for a touchdown and we didn’t respond or battle back and it ballooned on us.”
Eli Stottlemeyer and Langstyn McClendon put Wayne on the board in the second quarter on a 12-yard pass hookup.
Wayne allowed a 75-yard kickoff return for a touchdown on the ensuing kickoff, adding to their self-inflicted wounds.
Stottlemeyer again found McClendon in the end zone on an 11-yard pass and catch to end the half.
Wewoka scored the lone points of the third quarter on a 45-yard run while Koby Williamson recovered a Wewoka fumble in the end zone in the fourth quarter for the final score of the evening.
“When you’re in this business long enough these things happen. I don’t feel like I called a good game and we are not making excuses. It was wet and we had bad snaps and got behind the chains,” Sharp noted
Defensively Sharp said his squad didn't keep the Wewoka running game in check and with their athleticism getting behind the eight ball early was a recipe for disaster and things got out of hand.
“They were one of the most athletic teams we'll see and we just couldn’t match their speed and athleticism,” Sharp said.
The Bulldogs head ball coach said if his team had just made a few plays here or there they could’ve been in the game late but didn't make the plays when they needed them.
“We’d have them hemmed up and they'd break tackles and again we just couldn’t match their team speed,” Sharp said,
“Hats off to them because they’re a really good team. We just got down so quick that it was over early.”
This week Wayne hosts the Wilson Eagles for a 7 p.m. kick Friday night.
“This will be one of those games where our kids are ready to get out there and get the bad taste out of their mouths,” Sharp said.
Wilson will base out of the 5-2 on the defensive side of the ball but will mix things up and give the Bulldogs a 6-1 look on occasion.
Offensively Wilson runs a spread attack with plenty of doubles and trips open looks but they still want to run the football.
“They have big, physical lineman on both sides of the ball,” Sharp continued.
“We need to play disciplined football and we can’t get out of our gaps. If we are sound in our assignments we'll have opportunities.”
The Eagles offense also utilizes the guard-tackle counter and quarterback power to keep teams guessing.
“We have to take care of the ball and not make mental mistakes like we have the last couple weeks,” Sharp closed.
Bulldog notes:
Wayne Head Coach Brandon Sharp did not have any player of the week nominees.
