Battled through some of the top teams in the state

The Washington Warriors went 5-0 at the Beast of the East to take the championship in the who’s-who’s of Oklahoma slow-pitch softball tournament.

“We played really well,” said Warrior head coach Tylor Lampkin.

Lindsay

They opened with a 22-1 win over 5A Lindsay.

Washington opened with a leadoff home run by Reese Schrader on the way to a six-run first inning.

They held Lindsay to one run and would not give up another run in an error-free ball game.

“We have so many kids capable of playing at a high level,” Lampkin said. “Kids are taking advantage of opportunities and I’m proud of our young kids.

“The seniors are doing a great job on leading, which is a blessing. They’re much more vocal this spring than they were in the fall.”

Senior Emjay Lucas was 4-4 and was on straight fire during the whole tournament.

“She got hot at the right time,” Lampkin said. “She had some big games for us and was really good. She only got out once in the tournament.”

She went 16-17 at the plate.

Olivia Palumbo was also 4-4 and had four RBIs.

In addition to Schrader’s homer, Washington had home runs from Halle Andrews, Julie Hoehner, Kinzlee Pogue and Lucas.

The Warriors slammed the door on the shutout with a 12-run third inning.

Tupelo

Washington next won a 7-5 game over Tupelo.

Washington scored one run in the first inning and never trailed in the game, scoring two in each the third, fourth and fifth innings.

Lucas homered twice and Schrader added on as well. Andrews had a pair of doubles.

Latta

The Warriors put on another hitting clinic in their 14-2 win over the Panthers.

Lucas had a pair of homers.

Schrader homered again, as did Ava Salcedo, Daphne Palumbo and Olivia Palumbo.

Alexis Gay, Andrews and Hoehner each had a double.

Washington blew the game open in the first inning with six runs. They had two in the second and another six-run effort in the third to close out the game.

Lampkin said his team has been playing good defense and pointed to senior Gay’s pitching as part of their success.

“She is just a really good slow-pitch pitcher,” he said. “People think it’s easy but it’s not. She has it down to a fine art and that really helps us.

“Halle and Reese have been really good in the middle infield and Ava Salcedo made a couple unbelievable plays in the outfield.”

Caddo

The first match up between Washington and Caddo ended with a 19-17 win.

The game was a shoot out with both teams having batters go yard multiple times.

Lucas had three homers and Hoehner hit two herself. Both girls had six RBI games.

But the most exciting swing of the day was the last one, by Hoehner, who hit a walk-off grand slam to take the win for the Warriors.

“The walk-off grand slam was pretty awesome,” Lampkin said.

Daphne Palumbo and Andrews also put balls over the fence.

The second meeting between the two schools in the tournament saw even more offensive action, ending with a 27-23 Warrior win.

And the undefeated champions.

Caddo got out on top and led through three innings.

Washington tied it in the fourth and took the lead for good in the fifth inning by scoring eight runs.

“We’ve responded so well this season,” Lampkin said. “We’ve lost three games by a total of four runs. And it came against two No. 1s and a No. 2 in their class. People didn’t think we’d be in this position.”

Washington, now ranked No. 3 in Class 5A, is 16-3 this season.
