Second year as Class 3A runners-up

Washington fell in the Class 3A State championship game to Idabel Saturday evening, 64-56.

It marked their second consecutive silver ball in girls basketball.

After defeating CCS in a thriller in the State semi-final game, they tipped off with Idabel in the finals at the Big House Saturday evening.

Idabel

With Idabel’s 6’ 6” post player Mary Carden looming in the post the Warriors tried their best to take her out of the game while also defending against wing player Jaylen Cauthron.

“When you take away the big girl you give some to the other players,” Washington head coach Kale Simon said. “When we did our part we did a good job with them. Idabel hit some tough shots to earn the right to be a State champion.”

Breanna Lindert had a team-high 22 points.

Kelby Beller scored 15, while  Preslee Johnson had 11 points.

“We matched them offensively but weren’t able to finish and complete a few defensive assignments to finish the job,” Simon said.

CCS

Washington defeated CCS at Yukon High School on Friday night in the semifinals.

“We could have lost the game as easily as we won,” Simon said. “Preslee hit a huge three and then Shelbie Caveness got the steal after that. Kelby and Breanna carried us on offense.”

Beller scored 18 points in the game and Lindert scored 17.

Johnson had eight points herself.

“We performed and all the credit goes to the team in that game,” Simon said.

Washington will graduate one senior off this year’s team in Brinley Thomas.

“She is one of the pioneers around here,” Simon said. “Our program is not easy, but if you work hard it’s fair and consistent. I’m glad that she can graduate from this program knowing she’s a pioneer and knowing expectations.”

Aside from Thomas, Washington will have the core of the team back for next season and the coach said they will be ready to go again.

“I’m proud of my team and I’m proud of how they fought,” he said. “We’re super grateful and humbled by the experience. But we’re still hungry enough to not be satisfied with the outcome.”

The Warriors finished the season with a 25-4 record.

Notes

Beller and Lindert were selected as co-conference MVPs.

Johnson was selected for 1st team all-conference and Caveness was selected as a 2nd team all-conference player.
