Team eyes district game at Casady

Washington’s first team offense only ran 37 plays at Dickson last Friday night but cashed in on six of those plays for touchdowns in a 43-13 romp over the Comets in Carter County.

Senior Kade Babcock was on the receiving end of a 22 yard pass from junior Creed Barrett to open the scoring parade in the first quarter. Babcock finished with three receptions for a team-leading 55 yards.

Barrett fired a pair of scoring strikes to senior Case Alexander, one for nine yards and one for a dozen.

“Creed did a good job of spreading the ball around to receivers Jackson Mays, Kade Babcock, Jefferson Hodge and Clive Green,” head coach Brad Beller said.

With 11 different ball carriers gaining yards in the contest for the Warriors, Washington rushed the rock 30 times for 189 yards. The Warriors were 10-17 passing for 131 yards.

Josiah Dickerson, Jaxon McKinney and Henry Mann all ran for scores. Dickerson and McKinney both sliced into the end zone from four yards out while Mann’s third quarter touchdown was a 23 yard burst.

On the defensive side of the ball, Penn State commit Case Alexander led the tackling chart with 10 stops including one tackle for loss.

Junior linebacker Gavin Foster had a monster game with seven tackles, two for losses, picked off a pass and registered a pair of quarterback sacks.

Henry Mann turned in a six tackle performance to go along with an interception while Charlie Mann had six stops. Jaxon McKinney made five tackles and Sean Boyd finished with three tackles and one tackle for loss.

The stingy Warrior defense yielded only eight Dickson first downs with five of those coming on the first Comet drive.

“Outside of the first drive our number one defense played unbelievable,” head coach Brad Beller said. “After that first drive they only gave up three first downs the rest of the night.

“Our linebacker crew of Gavin Foster, Case Alexander, Jaaron Gordon and Charlie Mann all had great games,” Beller continued. “But the unsung heroes are in our defensive line like Sean Boyd and Dom Palumbo.”

Beller noted the defensive play of Jaxon McKinney at safety and Charlie Mann in the defensive secondary.

“They both made several tackles and broke up several pass attempts,” the coach said.

Up next for the 4-1 2-0 Warriors is a road trip this Thursday evening to Casady in Oklahoma City.

The Cyclones will base out of a 3-4 on defense, a defense Beller calls “opportunistic”.

“They will play a two high safety look the majority of the time,” Beller said. “On offense they are a pro-style team. They have a shotgun element, a one tight end look, a two tight end look and have a lot of different formations.

“They try to get you out of position with their motion,” the coach said.

Beller called getting properly aligned a key to the game for his Warriors. That and adjusting to their motion.

“On offense we need to get the ball in the hands of our athletes out in space,” he confirmed.

Casady is 1-4 on the year. Kick off is set for 7 p.m.

Warrior notes:

Washington Head Coach Brad Beller nominated Joe Oakley as the Offensive Lineman of the Week. Oakley graded out at just over 91 percent against the Comets.

Beller nominated Kade Babcock as the Offensive Player of the Week. He had three receptions for a team-high 55 yards and one touchdown.

Gavin Foster got the nod as the Defensive Player of the Week. He had seven tackles including two for losses, two quarterback sacks and intercepted a pass.

Beller nominated Sean Boyd as the Defensive Lineman of the Week for his four tackle and one TFL against Dickson.
