Man killed after deputies serve eviction notice

Posted

One person is dead following an officer-involved shooting Monday at 7:02 p.m.
Two McClain County Sheriff Deputies were serving an eviction notice along with one misdemeanor warrant at 829 W. Apache St. in Purcell when the scene took a turn for the worse.
The suspect, identified by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation as 52-year-old John William Stockton, barricaded himself in a bedroom when deputies arrived.
The suspect lived with a family member at the residence, who requested the eviction notice.
Deputies attempted to negotiate with the suspect and then called Purcell Police for assistance with “less than a lethal option,” Public Information Officer Scott Gibbons said.
Pepper spray and a taser were ineffective, the McClain County Sheriff’s Department reported.
Gibbons said the suspect then charged at deputies with a knife and they discharged a firearm.
The OSBI reported life-saving measures were attempted at the scene. The suspect was transported to Purcell Municipal Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
No one else was injured.
The OSBI said this is an ongoing investigation.
