Friday’s kickoff set for 7 p.m.

It was a tale of two halves for Purcell at Conger Field last Friday night.

Purcell went toe-to-toe with Kingfisher in the first half, misplaying on a field goal attempt at the end of the second quarter sending both teams knotted at 0-0 to the locker room.

Kingfisher came out swinging in the second half and posted a 34-0 victory.

“In the first half we played pretty well defensively,” head coach Aaron Dillard said. “Obviously to shut that team out was big. We got them to turn it over on downs a couple of times.

“We were a bend but don’t break defense,” the coach continued. “Ethan Colburn had a big fourth down stop. Braylon Francis played well and Liam Cummings and Brody Walkup both had good fourth down pressures.

“I was very encouraged with thet first half and very discouraged about what happened in the second half,” Dillard said. “We moved the ball and ran very effectively but we didn’t execute on the field goal with a bad snap and couldn’t get the ball on the ground.”

Cooper Selman led the tackling chart with nine stops. Francis was right on his heels with eight tackles. Haynes and Carter Thomas both had four tackles and Colburn finished with three.

Selman led the Dragon rushing attack with nine carries for 67 yards. Cash Cook finished with 51 yards.

“Ty Nichols and JJ Hitchcock both added some rushing yards,” the coach said.

The Dragons will face the McLoud Redskins Friday with kick off set for 7 p.m. at the Redskins’ stadium.

Dillard said they are a pistol-zone team on offense and base their defense out of a 4-2.

“They remind me a lot of us,” Dillard said. “They are pretty competitive for a long time and then make some mistakes in the second half.

“They are a run oriented team and like to run down hill,” the coach continued. “They have a good quarterback who is a runner. He will hand off and hand off and then run a bootleg.”

Dillard said they have played Marlow and North Rock Creek very tough in the past few weeks.

“They’ll definitely make you work for it,” he concluded.

Dragon notes

Purcell Head Coach Aaron Dillard nominated Cooper Selman as the Offensive Player of the Week for his nine carriers for 67 yards rushing against Kingfisher.

Dillard nominated Jesus Cruz as the Offensive Lineman of the Week. He graded out at 74 percent against the Yellowjackets.

Nominated as the Defensive Player of the Week was Braylon Francis. He had eight tackles and forced a fumble last Friday night.

There was no nomination for Defensive Lineman of the Week.
