There’s a lot at stake this Friday night at Washington when 7-2 Chandler Lions pay a call on the No. 2 ranked Warriors.
A Warrior victory will make them District champions with two home playoff games.
A loss to Chandler would send them to No. 1 Lincoln Christian in the second round.
The Lions, who run a very multiple spread offense, have only one District loss, while the Warriors don’t have a league loss. But the head-to-head meeting will determine the title and ensure the first two rounds at home.
Chandler will base their defense out of a 3-4 but again, head coach Brad Beller reports they are very multiple out of it.
Kick off Friday at Reed Field will be at 7 p.m. with Senior Night starting at 6:35 p.m.
Last Friday night the Warrior defenders limited Lindsay to 15 total yards of offense including negative 10 yards rushing pitching a 48-0 shutout.
“At one point, they had seven straight pass plays that were either incomplete or for no yards,” Beller reported. “For the last several weeks we have been playing really well on defense.
“We flew around and were very physical,” Beller continued. “We had two busted coverages but outside of that we were very disciplined and very physical.”
Henry Mann was The Man, leading the team with 10 tackles including eight solo stops out in space. He repeatedly made tackles out in open space at crucial points in the game, the coach said.
Beller said the trio of Hunter Sanders, Dom Palumbo and Kai Palacol were able to get pressure by themselves on the Leopard quarterback.
“They did a great job of pressuring and when you can drop eight it makes your call sheet open up,” Beller said about covering passing routes.
“Our cornerbacks Bo Beard, Rhett Dickerson and Kade Babcock played great,” the coach said. “Any time you only allow four completions, those guys are making plays throughout the game.”
Gavin Foster finished with seven solo stops, one tackle for loss and one quarterback sack.
Case Alexander made seven tackles, three for losses and had a quarterback sack. Sammy Salcedo finished with six tackles and Jaaron Gordon had five stops, with three behind the line of scrimmage.
Junior signal caller Creed Barrett was 17-21 for 223 yards and three touchdowns while rushing three times for 31 yards and scored a rushing touchdown to open the scoring in the first period from nine yards out.
As a team, Washington gained 176 yards on the ground on 29 carries and a trio of touchdowns.
Josiah Dickerson scored on a 15 yard scamper. Jaxon McKinney scored on a four yard burst and Sammy Salcedo closed out the Warrior scoring on a 15 yard scoot into the end zone in the fourth quarter.
Barrett’s scoring strikes went to Josiah Dickerson for 10 yards, Jackson Mays for 19 and Kade Babcock for 13.
The old saying it all starts up front ISUF held true for the Warriors last Friday night with outstanding play from Trip Wilson, Evan Painter, Jackson Glover, Joseph Oakley, Adam Sharp and tight end Jett Holland.
“Our offensive linemen controlled everything from run blocking to pass blocking and inside and outside run game,” Beller giving them all a pat on the back.
“Funny thing, our stats were not as high as usual,” the coach noted. “After a slow start, I thought our passing game was very efficient,” Beller said. “The most amazing stat was that seven different guys have a reception. That showed us we can distribute the ball. We don’t just have a couple of guys but we have 10 guys that can make plays on the offensive side of the ball.”
Warrior notes:
Head coach Brad Beller nominated Creed Barrett as the Offensive Player of the Week. Barrett was 17-21 through the air for 223 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed the pigskin three times for 31 yards, including a nine-yard touchdown.
The nominee for Defensive Lineman of the Week went to Hunter Sanders, who had three tackles that included two for losses and one quarterback sack.
The Defensive Player of the Week nomination went to Henry Mann who had 10 tackles including eight solo stops and a quarterback sack.
Trip Wilson got the nod as the Offensive Lineman of the Week. He graded out at 84 percent against Lindsay.
