Editor’s note: Answering The Purcell Register’s five questions this week is Katrina Wilkins, a first grade teacher at Purcell Elementary School.
Q. How did you get into teaching?
A. Through helping teach and coach kids’ camps growing up, I discovered my love for teaching kids new things at a young age. That’s when I decided I wanted to be a teacher and I made that my plan for college.
Q. What’s your favorite part of your job?
A. My favorite part of my job is when a student finally gets something they have been struggling with and then the light bulb goes off and it all “clicks” and you get to see the look of excitement and accomplishment in them.
Q. What’s the most challenging part of your job?
A. The most challenging part of my job is the worry that comes after the kids go home. A teacher’s care and love doesn’t end at 3:15.
Q. How has education changed since you started your teaching career?
A. Technology has, by far, been the biggest change over time with my teaching career. When I first started teaching, I had to have a million books with patterns and lesson pages to copy because the internet wasn’t what it is now.
Nowadays all you need is google and you can find just about everything you need. This helps students learn information at a more rapid pace and progress a lot faster.
Q. What is your favorite memory of your career?
A. I don’t think I can pick just one, but one of my favorite memories teaching is when my kindergarten class had been studying weather. They made a weather forecast video and worked so hard on it that it made it on the news, and they all got to watch themselves really forecasting the weather on TV. They felt like celebrities. (I’m hoping to see one of them take over for David Payne one day.)
