Wee Ball vs. WCWS

Posted

Last Tuesday I was thinking about my friends and fellow OU Alumni who were at the OU-Florida State softball game in Oklahoma City.

My mind wandered to my family and friends who were watching on television.

I would have been one of the latter but instead I was at the Purcell Baseball/Softball complex watching dog pile after dog pile of Wee Ballers chasing after ground balls.

Instead of watching Jocelyn Alo swat the ball around the park, I was watching a passel of four-year-olds hit mostly little dribblers off a stationary tee.

A couple of the Green Team members could actually make solid contact and when they did, the little girls on the Yellow Team needed to duck.

But a couple of them forgot to duck much like Ronald Reagan joked after he got shot back in 1980.

There was  not one but two of the miniature Yellow Team girls crying while standing in the infield.

They needed tender loving hugs and assurances they would be okay.

Neither were seriously injured but a shot to the chin was a little much for the pint-size ball players.

Watching the diminutive players trying to learn the game had some very humourous moments.

Like the time a mini Yellow Team female knocked the ball off the tee and took off for first.

The only difference from most of the hitters was she forgot to throw the bat to the ground after making contact.

About half way down the first baseline the light came on in her little head.

You could tell she was in a quandary as to whether to run back to home plate and put the bat down or simply drop it where she was.

As the wheels turned, she opted for dropping it where she was and continued her journey to first base.

As it turned out, watching number two grandson play ball was much more fun than watching OU lose the first game of the Champ Series.
