Last week the Wayne Bulldogs were in Union City for Districts. They dropped their first game to Southwest Covenant, 14-9, and their second game with Union City, 9-0.

“We didn’t get where we wanted to go, but we won a lot of games. We had a good season, and some of our younger guys got some good experience,” head coach Shane Collins said.

The Bulldogs finished the season with a 15-11 record. They will graduate four seniors, Braden McClendon, Wyatt Webster, Logan Taylor and Casey Kane.

“We’ll miss our seniors. Braden was always solid on the mound and Wyatt did a great job at third for us for the last two years. The seniors have been helpers.”

Southwest Covenant

In their first game against Southwest Covenant, the Bulldogs lost 14-9.

The Patriots jumped in front 2-0 after the first inning. Kane’s double in the second inning tied it up at 2-2.

But, a Wayne error in the third gave Southwest Covenant a 4-2 lead. The Bulldogs tied it up again, 4-4, in the third after a McClendon single and a Kane sacrifice fly.

Another two runs came across the plate by the Patriots in the third and they led 6-4. But, Wayne again tied it up when Sloan Jackson doubled.

The Patriots added four runs in the fourth to take the lead for good. Wayne made a late push, scoring three runs in the sixth inning. Southwest Covenant added two more runs in each of the final three innings.

“In the 6th inning we had bases loaded and only got one run out of it.”

Wayne collected 11 hits in the loss. Ty Kemp, Jackson and McClendon each had two. Kane finished the game with three RBIs.

Duke Moore took the loss on the mound. He went four innings, striking out four and allowing 10 runs on nine hits.

“Duke really pitched well and threw a lot of strikes. But we had too many errors in the field.”

Kemp came on in relief for two innings. He struck out one.

“We just didn’t play well. I think they adjusted better than we did,” Collins said.

Union City

In their second game, Wayne lost 9-0 to Union City.

The Bulldogs collected four hits, one each from Webster, Kemp, Kane and Taylor.

McClendon was on the mound for the loss. He pitched four innings and struck out two.
