The Wayne Bulldogs dismantled the Allen Mustangs last Thursday night, 55-15.
The Bulldogs were powered by their defense who gave up a total of 54 yards of offense.
Allen started the scoring with a 75-yard touchdown throw with only a minute and 33 seconds of game action off the clock to take a 7-0 lead.
Wayne immediately answered with four first quarter touchdowns to put the game out of reach before the start of the second frame.
Eli Stottlemeyer had touchdown runs of four and two yards with the first coming at the 7:40 mark in the first while the second was with 2:19 remaining in the first quarter. The Bulldogs converted one of two conversion tries with Lucas Hannah hauling in a Stottlemeyer pass on the second two-point try to give Wayne a 14-7 lead.
With just under two minutes left in period one Riley Taylor picked off an Allen pass and promptly took it to the end zone for a pick six. Stottlemeyer ran in the two point conversion and Wayne led 22-7.
But the Bulldogs weren't finished. Jeremiah Peterson took a handoff and raced 34-yards for a touchdown with under a minute left in the first that extended the Wayne lead to 28-7.
Tyler Collins got in on the scoring action early in the second with a nine-yard touchdown run that was followed by a Stottlemeyer to Langston McClendon two-point conversion.
Six minutes later Collins was back in the end zone after a two-yard run that gave the Bulldogs a 42-7 advantage.
Taylor found himself in the end zone on offense with :47 seconds left in the first half after a short two-yard run. Wayne nailed the point after attempt and headed to the locker room up 49-7.
The Bulldogs final touchdown of the evening came at the 10:50 mark in the third. Collins sprinted past the Allen defense for a 50-yard run to cap Wayne's offensive onslaught.
Allen tacked on a late fourth quarter touchdown on a five-yard run after the Bulldogs had removed all of their starters.
“We ran the ball very well,” head coach Brandon Sharp said.
“Our defense dug in after an early bust and played well.”
Allen scored on the third play of the game but following the touchdown the Mustangs had negative 21 yards of offense the rest of the evening and didn't manage another first down until the fourth quarter.
Sharp was pleased with his rushing attack as the Bulldogs racked up 419 yards on the ground thanks to the play of his offensive line and running backs. Opening holes for their fellow comrades were Lane Canfield, Zeke Gavia, Zach Norton, Nate Isaiah and Ryder Alexander.
“Overall, we did what we needed to do. They’re in rebuild mode and are starting six freshmen and at times have eight on the field. Their coach is doing a good job keeping them motivated,” Sharp said.
“But we went and took care of business and were able to get some young kids some quality reps. We also came out clean and healthy which is a big deal right now.”
Sharp noted the defenive play of Zeke Gavia who had five tackles and a forced fumble, Taylor who had the pick six and Jake Turner who recovered a fumble.
“The whole defense played well. The defenive line was in the backfield all night so hats off to them," Sharp said.
“We continue to get better on that side of the ball. We've got tough games coming up and we need to get ready for Canadian.”
This week Wayne hosts Canadian for homecoming at D.S. Zack Powell Stadium Friday night at 7 p.m.
Offensively the Cougars base out of the Slot T and focus on running the ball with misdirections and traps.
“Everybodys bunched in tight offensively and they have a speed back who can get to the edge and they have a bruiser at fullback,” Sharp said.
“The key is we have to slow down their quarterback because he makes the offense go. We have to play sound defensive football and not get out of our gaps because if we do they’ll pop us on one of their traps.”
On the defensive side of the ball Canadian runs a 3-4 base defense with a big defensive line and linebackers who know how to fill holes.
“We have to block well because their linebackers flow to the ball really well and also fill holes very well,” Sharp said.
“If we hold up on the offensive line we will be okay. If we don't stay on blocks it could be a rough night.”
Bulldog notes:
Wayne Head Coach Brandon Sharp nominated Tyler Collins as the Offensive Player of the Week. Collins had three touchdowns on 13 carries and finished with 205 yards rushing.
Lane Canfield drew the Offensive Lineman of the Week nominee grading out at 80 percent.
Zeke Gavia was the Defensive Player of the Week nominee after registering five tackles and forcing a fumble.
Sharp nominated Koby Williamson as his Defensive Lineman of the Week. Willaimson had four tackles against the Mustangs.
