The Washington Warrior softball program added some more hardware to the trophy case after they won the Class 5A State slow-pitch softball tournament May 8.
Washington beat Purcell, Broken Bow and North Rock Creek in that order at the Ballfields at FireLake to claim the title.
“It was an awesome day for sure,” said head coach Tylor Lampkin, who has led the Warriors’ to two slow-pitch softball titles.
The latest title puts Washington ahead of Davenport as Oklahoma’s all-time leading school for slow-pitch titles.
Purcell
Washington opened with a 16-5 win over Purcell.
The Dragons opened with a four run first inning.
Washington scored three in the bottom half to stay within striking distance.
“Some of the younger kids were nervous in the first game but they settled in,” Lampkin said.
After the first inning the Warriors only allowed one more run for the rest of the game.
Meanwhile, Washington scored four in the second, one in the third, five in the fourth and three in the fifth.
“We had just unbelievable hitting,” Lampkin said. “We started each game off a little slow and had to bounce back – and did they ever. They got hot and stayed hot. It was pretty awesome.”
The Warriors had homers by Julie Hoehner (2), Raelee Adkins (2), Ava Salcedo, Emersyn Massey, Reese Schrader and Shelbie Caveness.
Broken Bow
The Warriors next beat Broken Bow 18-5.
A strong finish of a pair of six-run innings put Washington over the top in the game.
“That game was a little scary at first,” Lampkin said. “They have a couple of home run hitters who broke it loose.”
Washington had homers of their own by Salcedo (2), Schrader (2) and Adkins. Schrader had six RBIs in the game.
North Rock Creek
Washington won in the finals 21-6 against North Rock Creek.
Washington had innings of 3, 6, 7 and 5.
All but one of Rock Creek’s runs came in the first inning.
Salcedo homered twice, as did Caveness.
Hoehner and Adkins also homered.
“Shelbie had by far the best day of her career. It was super cool for her to go out like that as a senior,” Lampkin said. “Julie did what she does all the time, she was on base all day.”
Salcedo had the most home runs on the team on the day with five.
“It was a team effort,” Lampkin said “Even the younger kids at the bottom of the lineup hit awesome. In the finals every player on the team got in. It was really fun to see them all participate.”
Washington finished the season with a 27-4 record.
Three of the four losses came early in the season as the team was transitioning from basketball to softball.
“I was super proud of where we came from. There was no break after basketball and they were worn out. But we figured out a way to make it fun,” Lampkin said. “This spring coach Kami Beller and I worked together to have track and softball practice, but also get the girls some rest.”
The only senior on the team is Caveness.
“I’m super proud of this bunch,” Lampkin said. “It’s one of the most fun years I’ve had. They sincerely rooted for each other to be their best.”
