Washington begins its quest for a fourth straight State Championship on the gridiron with a home opening contest with Community Christian Friday night at 7 p.m.
The Warriors, who have won 44 straight games, will be breaking in their new turf field as well when the Royals roll into town.
Beller and his staff expect the Royals to operate out of the spread on offense.
“They will show a lot of one back or an empty backfield package,” Beller noted. “On defense they will base out of a 3-4 but on both sides of the ball they are very multiple.”
“We’ve only seen them on tape but their linemen look like they have pretty good size.
The Royals return three of the offensive lineman off last year’s squad but apparently breaking in some new skill positions.
“We have to come out of the gate swinging,” the coach said.
That’s something they didn’t do in their scrimmage last Thursday against Tuttle.
“We started out really bad on both offense and defense,” Beller said of the scrimmage. “They hit us in the mouth early. It took a little bit to settle in.
“Once we did, we had a lot of kids step up and make plays at positions we didn’t know they would. We rebounded and responded in a very positive way,” he confirmed.
“We had a lack of energy to start the scrimmage. We’ve got to come out with way better energy Friday night and have way better execution to begin the game.”
