The Washington girls won the Boomarang Classic Basketball Tournament over the weekend.
They notched victories over Byng, Kiefer and Dale.
The Warriors, who have finished runners-up in the State tournament the past two seasons, are built for another deep playoff run this year.
Byng
Washington cruised with an 81-22 win over the Pirates.
Preslee Johnson (15), Kelby Beller (14) and Briley Beller (13) all scored double figures in the game.
Despite the lopsided victory, Warrior head coach Kale Simon wasn’t completely satisfied.
“We didn’t play particularly well Thursday or Friday but we knew the importance of Saturday,” he said of the finals match up with Class 2A No.1 ranked Dale. “I was proud of how we got after it and performed against them.”
Kiefer
Washington played Kiefer in the second round of the tournament and defeated them 55-21.
Johnson (13) and Shelbie Caveness (11) were in double figures.
The coach said he was happy with his team’s rebounding.
“We rebounded well and were able to run out in transition,” Simon said. “The guards played well and everyone rebounded.”
Dale
Washington defeated Dale 71-76 in the Championship game.
Washington was out to a commanding double figure lead at halftime over the No. 1 Class 2A team.
Foul trouble late in the game tried to trip up the Warrior victory but Simon went to his bench after Kelby Beller and Caveness fouled out.
“Our depth is a strength and we had girls give us good minutes,” Simon said.
Briley Beller, Eternity Self and Aubri Clary provided good minutes in the win.
Johnson (22), Breanna Lindert (18), Kelby Beller (15) and Lonnie Parnacher (12) all scored in double figures.
The tournament win was a reminder of the team Washington brings back this season.
“We have everything we need on this team,” Simon said. “Right now we’re fighting to be tough, to be disciplined and to form great habits to help this team. Our habits are the most important thing.”
Washington is ranked No. 1 in Class 3A and is 5-0.
Boys
Head coach Trevor Smith’s boys team claimed third place in the Boomerang Classic.
They defeated Cushing and Kingston but lost to Dale.
Cushing
They opened with a 71-60 win over Cushing in the opening round.
Smith said he was pleased with his team’s ball movement , which has allowed to get multiple players involved in the offense.
“We’re sharing the ball really well and we have essentially five guys averaging double figures,” he said. “The ball is moving really well and we’re playing well together.”
Gavin Cortez (20), Mason Adams (15) and Cooper Collins (10) led the team in scoring.
Dale
The Warriors were defeated 66-44 by the No. 1 team in Class 2A.
Cortez was in double figures again with 15 points.
Kingston
The Warriors defeated Kingston 68-56 in the third place game.
Jack McKimmey (17), Teagen Foster (17) and Cooper Collins (14) led the scoring.
The Washington bench has proven to play a big role so far this season and Smith said his bench is deep.
“Depth is really helpful for us right now,” he said. “Our whole bench could contribute minutes for the team this year.”
Smith said the edition of the football players after their season ended has gone “seamlessly” and they are quickly contributing to the team.
Right now he said his team needs to be more consistent and close out games better.
“We need to be better at finishing games,” Smith said.
Washington is 4-1 and ranked No. 9 in Class 3A.
