The Washington Warrior girls basketball team defeated KIPP Tulsa 61-45 to win the Regional basketball tournament at Beggs last Saturday.

They will play Luther in the Area tournament Friday at 6 p.m. in Enid.

Washington defeated Chandler 65-18 in the opening game of the Regional tournament.

The Warriors got out to a quick start and took a 10 lead by the end of the first quarter, before extending it to 21 by halftime.

Despite the success, head coach Kale Simon saw plenty of room for improvement.

“We didn’t play as well as we wanted but it’s hard to complain about a 47 point win,” he said. “We did some good things but we hadn’t played in over a week and it showed.”

Breanna Lindert led all scorers with 17 points.

She got scoring help from Rielyn Scheffe and Kelby Beller who had 13 and 10, respectively.

KIPP

The Warriors followed the Chandler win with a 61-45 win over KIPP Tulsa in the Regional finals.

Preslee Johnson gave the Warriors 18 points and led all scorers.

Scheffe finished with 13, Lindert had 12 and Beller scored 11.

“I was proud of our girls in the win,” Simon said. “We didn’t shoot well from three and we were missing layups. We had to grind and I’m proud of our girls for finding a way to win.”

The coach said his team turned up the pressure on defense, which led to some easy baskets.

“We challenged ourselves and found a way,” Simon said.

Luther

The Warriors will play Luther (21-4) Friday night in the Area tournament.

Simon said he expects Luther to play an aggressive brand of basketball.

“They play as hard as any team I’ve seen, and that’s a compliment to them,” he said. “They are the aggressor on both ends of the floor.”

Washington is 24-1.

Boys

The Warrior boys team lost to Class 3A No. 1 Metro Christian, 60-49, in the Regional finals.

They advanced to Area and will play Cascia Hall Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in Enid.

Cascia Hall (18-9) plays an aggrieved style defense with defenders on the offensive players during the entire game.

“They pressure the ball really well,” said head coach Trevor Smith. “I’ve never seen them stop pressure.”

The coach said the Commandos have a deep bench and will play 12 players. They are guard oriented.

“They are long and will pressure you into turnovers for easy run-outs,” Smith said.

Chandler

Washington defeated Chandler 70-37 in the first game of the Regional tournament.

“Our guards were a little better and we shot it really well,” Smith said.

The Warriors made 11 three-point buckets as a team.

They were led in scoring by Hayden Hicks, who finished with 15 points.

Mason Adams had 14 and Seth Bunch found double figures with 10 points.

Metro Christian

Washington fell to Class 3A No. 1 60-49 last Saturday.

The Warriors had the lead heading into halftime but were unable to respond to a couple runs by Metro Christian.

“We battled them hard,” Smith said. “We played decent defense against them. They have it all, good guards and big players inside.”

Adams led the team in scoring with 15 points, followed by Hicks with 14 and Andrews with 12.

The coach likes where his team is at this point in the season.

“Overall we’re playing well and we’re feeling pretty good,” he said. “We had won seven of our last eight before Saturday.”

The Warriors are 16-9.
