Two hitter for Idlett

Posted

Purcell snapped a four-game skid in the first round of the Newcastle Tournament last Thursday when sophomore Zach Idlett tossed a two-hitter  in a 9-1 run-rule victory over Destiny Christian.

Destiny Christian’s lone run came in the fifth inning on three errors.

“I thought Zach threw well against them,” head coach Cole Sharp said. “He had good control all day.

“Hitting-wise we hit the ball pretty well,” the coach said singling out that bats of Dayton Smith, Creed Smith, Nate Willis and Carter Goldston.

It was Creed Smith that hit the walk off single in the sixth to confirm the run rule victory.

Willis smacked an RBI double to start the scoring in the bottom of the first, one of three runs in the inning.

Creed Smith went 2-3 including a double and knocked in three base runners.

Purcell added three runs in the third and two more in the fourth before closing out the scoring with a run in the bottom half of the sixth.

Dayton Smith was 2-4 and scored twice.

Hayden Harp, Brodrick Smith and Carter Goldston all had a hit in the game. Both Harp and Brodrick had two RBIs in the victory.

Cade Smith and Willis led the offense both going 2-4 in the game. Willis and Idlett had the two RBIs for the Dragons.

Dayton Smith, who struck out eight Racers, took the loss on the mound. He was relieved by Willis in the fifth inning.

“Dayton didn’t have his best stuff,” Sharp said. “His command was a little off.

“I thought Nate came in and did a good job in relief.”

In the game for third place in the tournament, Noble led the entire game and put the Dragons away, 8-2.

Brodrick Smith took the loss on the bump with relief from Drew Kimbrell.

“I thought Brodrick threw pretty well,” Sharp said. “Noble is a good hitting team. Drew threw well overall but lost his control a little in the last inning. He did a good job for his first varsity action.”

Goldston’s 2-3 performance at the plate, that included a double, led the Dragons. Purcell also got hits from Cade, Dayton and Harp with Cade and Dayton collecting RBIs.

“The game was close at 4-2 into the seventh,” Sharp said.  “We gave up some runs in the seventh to let them pull away.”

Purcell was 6-11 heading into Tuesday’s game with Heritage Hall.

The Chargers shut out Purcell 10-0 Monday in Oklahoma City.

The Dragons were scheduled to host Lexington on Friday and host Seminole next Monday before traveling to visit the Chieftains next Tuesday.

Dragon notes:

Carter Goldston and Nate Willis made the All-Tournament team at Newcastle.
