Tons of depth

Season begins Friday in NRC Tournament

Depth is the key word for the 2023 Purcell slow-pitch softball team.

Coach Sarah Jones begins her eighth season at the helm of the Dragons and welcomes 18 players on the roster.

“For the first time in a long time the majority of our fast-pitch girls are playing slow-pitch,” the coach said.

Returning players include senior Kyleigh Wells, juniors Kelly Anderson, Payci Constant, Kailynn Helton and sophomores Kyleigh Green, Ella Resendiz and Hannah Whitaker. And freshman Anika Raper.

New this year will be senior Cora Vazquez, junior Haley Kretchmar and a bevy of freshmen.

Those include Lili Del Toro, Aubrey Elmore, Kimberly Carrillo, Josie Kretchmar, Mackenzie McKay, McKinly Miller, Rosie Smith, Kaylin Vazquez and Isabella Walker.

“This is the first year that we truly will have a lot of depth and a lot of options in multiple positions,” Jones said. “We may be young but we have a lot of talent that will be able to give us a chance to be highly competitive.

Kelly Anderson will be back in the circle for the Dragons with  Cora Vazquez and Payci Constant able to come in as backups.

Senior Kyleigh Wells will see some time at first base and behind the plate.

“Everyone else will be seeing some time in the infield and outfield until we find the right fit and lineup,” Jones confirmed. “This year we are going to focus on mastering the situational aspects of the game on offense and defense and hopefully, our girls can get as many defensive chances as they can, but most importantly compete and have fun.”

Jones and assistant coach Scott Ward are excited to see how the season unfolds.

“We have a chance to go deep into the season and I know the girls are excited as well,” Jones concluded.

The Dragons open the 2023 season Friday in the NRC Tournament.
