If you’ve ever wondered why Veterans Day and Memorial Day ceremonies begin at 11 a.m. here’s why.

Those services frequently start at 11 a.m. because of the historical significance of the armistice that ended World War I, which took effect at the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month” of 1918.

One such event took place Monday at 11 a.m. at Hillside Cemetery.

Under the direction of Jay Tate the annual Memorial Day ceremony went off without a hitch.

If you had a day off Monday, thank a veteran.

When you get to go to a little league baseball or softball game or sporting events at any level, thank a veteran.

When you go to the grocery store or church or a movie, thank a veteran.

For you see, everything we get to do in this great country is all because of the sacrifices, some the ultimate sacrifice,  of the veterans who have sacrificed their personal lives and bravely fought U.S. adversaries.

Memorial Day is the day we salute and recognize and tell the ones that are still with us how much we appreciate them.

Thanks to all our veterans and especially to those who gave their lives that we might be free.

I wish  we could be free from so much hate and discourse, especially in politics.

It’s been a while since our country has stood united and that’s a shame.

We have so much to be thankful for, but instead of enjoying what we have we have to fuss and fight about every issue that comes down the pike.

For the life of me I sometimes can’t believe that every issue can be twisted into some political red versus blue football topic.

In some camps there even seems to be a lack of patriotism going on and that my friends is unacceptable.

Regardless of your political views, we are all supposed to be on the same team.
