We were recently at junior high football games at Sulphur.
To say it was hot was like saying there are seven days in a week.
How hot was it?
It was so hot Gracie and I elected to sit on the Sulphur side for the seventh and eighth grade games since there was shade, even though we were there to watch one of the junior high cheerleaders.
We could see her from a distance and were much cooler than the poor Dragon fans in the beating-down sun with temperatures in the triple digit range.
As the eighth grade game was winding down and things were heading to the freshman game that we were actually there for, a transformer blew near the stadium and the lights went dark.
After a short period of time, Sulphur officials at the game said there would be no more football that night.
So all the Dragon fans who made the trek to Sulphur were tucking their tails and bugging out.
It just so happens the Sulphur Superintendent of Schools is a Purcell School teacher alumni in Matt Holder.
Holder taught school here back in the late 1990s and early 2000s so he’s acquainted with a bunch of Dragons who were at Sulphur that night.
As we were walking out of the darkened stadium Matt Montgomery said in jest he was going to write a scathing letter to Matt Holder about the lack of lighting like it was Holder’s fault.
As soon as the words came out of his mouth Holder, who was there live and in person near the exit, twirled around and looked Matt straight in the eye.
They laughed when they saw each other as they are well acquainted.
Just like people have said forever, you never know who’s listening when you are talking.
Like Mom always teaches, if you don’t have something nice to say don’t say anything at all.
Holder is in his eighth year as superintendent at Sulphur.
