Rethinking missionary travel?

Posted

In light of what’s currently going on in Haiti, perhaps churches and other groups should reconsider going overseas on mission trips.

There’s certainly no shortage of people and places that need help in our very own country.

Plus, the savings on travel expenses alone could be used to help the needy as well.

It’s a down right shame that 16 Americans, including five children, and one Canadian are being held hostage by a powerful gang in Haiti.

But Haiti is a dangerous place and that needs to be considered when such trips are scheduled.

The missionaries had visited an orphanage in Croix-des-Bouquets, a northeast suburb of the capital Port-au-Prince, when the 400 Mawozo gang kidnapped the group.

Now the gang is demanding $17 million for their safe return.

It’s awful for a group of people who were trying to do the right thing and help the less fortunate end up needing help themselves.

This is my annual appeal to keep daylight savings time the year round or don’t change it at all.

When ever there is a time change people’s lives are interrupted at the very least.

There is legislation both on the national scene and in Oklahoma to keep it.

I hope they do.

Congratulations to the Purcell Dragons football program for becoming one of only eight programs in Oklahoma to have 700 victories on the gridiron.

There is coverage of the milestone and the game with Crooked Oak in this week’s Purcell Register.
