Heading into Tuesday’s road trip to Cushing, Purcell’s fast-pitch softball team was 1-5 on the season.
The Dragons’ lone victory came on the road at Harrah August 14, a 3-1 district win.
Ava Sparks chalked up the victory in the circle, throwing a complete seven inning game.
She scattered seven hits while striking out five Panthers. Sparks issued a lone walk in the victory.
Sophomore Miaca Martinez led the Dragon offense with a pair of hits and two RBIs while freshman Kyndall Williams had a two-hit game with one RBI.
Purcell started the season with their only home game of the year so far with a six-inning lightning shortened 2-0 loss at the hands of Lindsay.
“We struggled to generate offense against a really good Lindsay pitcher, who limited the Dragons to KK Vazquez’s lone hit,” head coach Cody Tutwiler said.
Ava Sparks started in the circle and threw a solid 5 1/3 innings, giving up two unearned runs on only four hits. She had six strikeouts and two walks.
Purcell played Perry at a neutral site at OCU in Edmond coming up short in an 8-4 verdict.
“It was a hard fought game for six innings,” Tutwiler said. “But we had too many miscues defensively and gave up three runs in the top of the seventh.”
The Dragon offense improved dramatically scoring four runs on seven hits, led by Martinez and freshman Jaycee Holman, who each had a pair of hits and an RBI.
A tough Mustang team pinned a 5-2 loss on the Dragons. Defensive errors plagued Purcell that ended up costing three unearned runs.
“Kendra Anderson started in the circle and threw well,” Tutwiler said.
She gave up only two earned runs on two hits.
Senior Mack McKay led the offense with a pair of hits and scored twice.
Sparks was tagged for the loss against Tahlequah when the Dragon offense sputtered. Sparks only allowed five hits. Four of the Tahlequah runs were unearned.
Tuttle pinned an 11-0 five inning run rule loss on the Dragons Monday.
“Too many defensive miscues and solid Tuttle pitching and defense led to a disappointing outcome,” Tutwiler said. “This was the first of two district match up between the two teams.”
The annual Heart of Oklahoma tournament is this weekend.
The Dragons host Newcastle Monday and travel to Perkins Tuesday next week.
