Panthers pin loss on Dragons

Four turnovers led to Purcell demise

Big plays by Pauls Valley on offense and turnovers by Purcell added up to a season ending loss for Purcell last Friday night.

Pauls Valley’s first play from scrimmage was a bad snap but the runner picked up the pigskin and ripped off 70 yards to pay dirt, a play that sort of set the tone for the night.

Four Dragon turnovers led to a 43-27 loss.

A bright spot for the Dragons was their passing game.

Senior quarterback Deaken Dobbins threw for 217 yards completing eight of 19 passes including a pair of touchdowns.

Junior Cash Cook had 233 receiving yards including a 27 yard touchdown reception and a 68 yard scoring snag. He also rushed three times for 48 yards.

Junior Cooper Selman scored a pair of second half touchdowns on runs of two and five yards.

“Cash Cook had a phenomenal night with almost 300 yards of total offense,” head coach Aaron Dillard said.

“He caught the ball well, ran the ball great and Deaken threw it well,” Dillard said.  “We just needed to run the ball better.”

With junior guard Halo DiRienzo getting injured on the first series, Landon Clark was thrust into playing guard.

“He was kind of an emergency player and hadn’t played much guard,” Dillard said. “But he filled in okay for us.”

The coach praised the play of senior offensive lineman Aron Barrera.

“And Ty Thoming had a positive impact for us at receiver. We had 408 yards of total offense which is a good number. Our demise was four turnovers.

“We moved the ball over the field then fumble, fumble fumble. It was very frustrating,” Dillard confirmed. “We gave up a ton of big plays. We didn’t play complementary football. When the offense was scoring the defense was giving up big touchdown plays.”

Dragon notes:

Head coach Aaron Dillard nominated Cash Cook as the Offensive Player of the Week. He rushed for 48 yards on three carries and had 233 yards receiving including a pair of touchdowns.

Dillard nominated Aron Barrera as the Offensive Lineman of the Week for his 81 percent grade against Pauls Valley last Friday night.

Brody Walkup was the nominee for Defensive Lineman of the Week. He had five tackles against the Panthers.

There was no nominee for Defensive Player of the Week.
