One point loss sends Lex home

52-51 loss to Lone Grove ends the Bulldogs’ season in Regionals

Last Friday night Lexington lost a one-point heartbreaker, 52-51, to Lone Grove to end their basketball season in the Regional tournament.

“We trailed the whole game but Ty (Mixon) hit a three with 25 seconds left to go up two. Then their post hit a three with three seconds left and they won by one,” head coach Tyler Thetford said.

In Friday’s loss Mixon was the leading scorer for Lexington with 17 points. Fifteen of his points were from behind the arc.

“They ran a match up zone to contain the middle. This opened up the outside shots and our work paid off,” Thetford said.

In fact, Lexington finished the game with 11 three-pointers, accounting for more than half of their total points.

Joining Mixon in double figures were Drew Dierking with 12 and Zeke Faulkenberry with 10.

Thursday night Lexington picked up a 74-68 win over Frederick sending them on to face Lone Grove.

Mixon was on fire, leading the team with 31 points. He had 23 first-half points.

Zeke Faulkenberry had a double-double, finishing the game with 24 points and 11 assists.

The Bulldogs jumped out in front from the start, outscoring Frederick in both the first and second quarters and holding a 45-28 halftime lead.

“Overall the guys played great in the postseason. They worked their tails off and they gave themselves a chance in each game.

“We had a productive basketball season and finished with more wins than last year,” Thetford said.

The Bulldogs finished the season with a 9-16 record. Seniors lost to graduation will include Ezra Faulkenberry, Corbin Perry, Trey Hartzog and Tate Collier.

Girls

The Lady Bulldogs were knocked out of postseason play by Comanche last Thursday, 46-30.

Maddie Manuel led the team with 10 points.

“It was like the goal had a lid on it. We just could not get the ball to go in,” head coach Jacobi Couch said.

Couch and his team had a game plan to keep close tabs on Comanche’s dynamic scorer and they were successful, holding her scoreless in the first half.

But, according to the coach, Lexington just could not score enough to win the game.

“It was not our night. But, the girls played hard defensively.”

The Lady ‘Dawgs finish the season with an 8-16 record. Seniors include Leslie Barber, Rylee Beason, Janelle Winterton and Maddie Manuel.

“Overall, there was a lot of growth this season. We learned a lot about ourselves and how tough we can be and that we can go out and compete with anyone.

“We are better than what we were at the beginning of our season,” Jacobi said.
