Although measurable precipitation was minimal, what freezing rain and snow that did fall in the Heart of Oklahoma early Tuesday morning brought much of the activity in town to a screeching halt.
Schools were cancelled. Many restaurants shuttered their doors Tuesday morning as slick driving conditions and dangerous wind chills put Mother Nature in full control.
Actual air temperatures lurked in the single digits down to near zero.
Numerous traffic accidents were reported with Green Avenue north of Grant all the way to the I-35 on-ramp clogged with cars blocking the roadway due to the glaze of ice on the roadway, according to the Purcell Police Department.
The extreme cold wave warning was projected to last until at least noon on Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.
