Purcell Basketball has a new sheriff, but a name that’s not new to the Dragon program or coaching in this area.

Matt Lohn, a 2006 graduate of Purcell High School, played for legendary Dragon Coach Lee Reimer and has most recently been an assistant basketball coach at Moore High School.

He was the Moore Assistant Coach of the Year this year and was Teacher of the Year during his stint at Lexington where he coached boys basketball from 2014-2017.

Superintendent Dr. Sheli McAdoo reported the board wanted a person with ties to the program and someone young who would be here awhile and build the program.

“Coach Lohn brings experience in coaching in multiple classes, a passion for mentoring youth through sports and a commitment to excellence not only on the court but also in the classroom,” Dr. McAdoo said.

Lohn and his wife of 10 years, Chelsea, have two sons, Robinson and Porter.

Chelsea teaches in the Moore School District.

In his senior year in 2006 Lohn was named CVC MVP and was named to the West All-State team.

He served as a Graduate Assistant to Reimer in 2007-2009. Lohn was head coach at Lexington from 2014-2017 and has been an assistant coach not only at Moore but also Santa Fe for boys and girls. He has also coached cross country and softball at various schools.

Lohn was officially hired Monday night during the board’s regular monthly meeting at the school administration building.

He takes over for Roger Raper, who has coached the Dragons for the past six years. Raper accepted the boys coaching position in Chickasha.

Also hired at the meeting was junior high social studies teacher Christopher Dunshie.

In conjunction with their FEMA grant for a safe room/gymnasium at the junior high, the board is also looking at building a new Ag Barn, remodeling the elementary gym, constructing a storm shelter at the elementary and a storm shelter at the intermediate school.

McAdoo also said the school will be responsible for bringing the junior high gym up to competition level adding a lobby, bleachers, scoreboard, concession stands and dressing rooms.

Parking spaces will be added east of the current high school and just north of the junior high, McAdoo said.

Goldsby Construction will manage the projects for the school system.

The board is expected to call for a resolution for a bond election to fund the projects, calling for the election August 27, Dr. McAdoo said. CC&E professional services will assist the school in the bond issue process. They worked with the school for a bond issue in 2017, McAdoo said.

Also at the meeting Monday the board approved summer school at the elementary, intermediate, junior high and high school levels.

The board also renewed its food service agreement with Keystone Food Service and approved an OSSBA policy recommendation for surveillance cameras and signage.

The board also approved fundraisers for junior high cheer, high school basketball, high school choir, high school show choir and music theatre.
