Key district game with playoff implications

After notching a key district victory over Atoka last week, Lexington’s Bulldogs have their eyes squarely on one of their pre-season goals.

With a victory Friday night in their 2023 football homecoming contest, the Bulldogs will have made the State Class 2A football playoffs.

Coach Keith Bolles’ Bulldogs are 4-3 on the season and 3-1 in district play.

It was a clutch pass reception by Hunter Olson that resulted in the go-ahead score in the fourth quarter.

Both teams had scored a touchdown in the third period leaving the game knotted at seven all heading into the final stanza.

Olson finished the night at Floyd West Field with three catches for 41 yards and the game-winning touchdown.

“It was a big win for us,” Bolles confirmed.

Bolles pointed to the excellent play by his defense coached by Kyle Wells and Derek Clark.

“Defense and special teams were the difference,” Bolles said. “Coach Wells and coach Clark had the defense ready. They did outstanding work preparing them.

“We got good play from our down linemen Gavrie Williams, Wyatt McBride, Issac Martin and Dalton Brewer.

“We got good play from our linebackers Ean Caywood, Buddy Cormany and Cameron Weatherford,” the coach continued. “And our secondary of Spencer Vanoostrum, Cadyn Krueger. Gage LaGace and Reagan Smith did a good job for us.”

Jace Johnson recovered a fumble on special teams.

“Our defense was ready and played outstanding. We bent a little but never broke,” the coach said.

Bulldog notes:

Lexington Head Coach Keith Bolles nominated Buddy Cormany as the Defensive Player of the Week for his 11 tackle performance in the win over Atoka.

Getting the nomination as the Defensive Linemen of the Week were Issac Martin and Dalton Brewer. They each had eight tackles, with each getting one for a loss and each breaking up a pass.

There were no nominations on offense.
