Two weeks since the Washington Lady Warriors’ game against Broken Bow was postponed due to winter weather, the two ranked teams finally got their chance to tussle Monday afternoon.
Washington came out with a 58-46 win.
Broken Bow, ranked No. 2 in Class 4A, led for a time during the back and forth game.
Washington found another gear in the fourth quarter though, outscoring the Savages 19-7.
“I was proud of the team for continuing to battle through foul trouble, battling not shooting the ball well, battling not being our best and taking it into the fourth quarter to finally pay off,” head coach Kale Simon said.
It was a gutsy win against a top-ranked team and an opportunity for the Warriors to get a measurement of where their team stands.
“It was a game to see where our strengths are and to show where we can still grow and improve in our weaknesses,” Simon said.
Bentli Brantley led the team in scoring with 21 points.
Hadley Beard was also in double figures with 11 points.
The Warriors also collected wins against Chickasha (60-36) and Lindsay (79-25).
Strong second and third quarters propelled the Warriors to the victory.
Brantley had 13 points and Beard and Preslee Johnson each scored 10.
Johnson’s 21 points in the Lindsay game led all scorers as the Warriors steam rolled the Leopardettes.
Eternity Self (14) and Kelby Beller (13) joined her in double figures.
Washington is 19-1.
Boys
The boys team picked up a big win over class 3A No. 8 Lindsay, 58-53, in overtime last Friday.
“We played really well Friday and put together 36 minutes of good basketball,” head coach Trevor Smith said. “Our defense was really good. We rebounded well and took care of the ball the best we have all year.”
The Warriors got rounded scoring with Jace Myers leading the way with 16 points.
Jax Mitchell had 12 points, while Cole Beard had 11 and Jack McKimmey scored 10.
“Hopefully we can build off that win and get hot in the Playoffs,” Smith said.
The Warriors lost to Chickasha, 57-40, and to Cache in the Rocky Clarke Invitational, 55-45.
“We turned it over too much in those games and just had no traction on offense,” Smith said. “We did a good job competing but had turnover after turnover.”
Washington is 7-13.
