High time to honor Wilson

Posted

Is it just me or does it seem like only yesterday we were all worried about Y2K.

How can that have been almost a quarter of a century ago?

A wise old guy told me when I first became a publisher that I’ll find the days are long and the years are short.

Truer words were never spoken.

That was 47 years ago, 33 of which have been right here in the Heart of Oklahoma.

Not sure where the time has gone but we must be having one heck of a time.

With Purcell on the verge of hiring another high school football coach it is time or may be even past time to honor the second winningest coach in Dragon history.

The football field is appropriately named Conger Field in honor of Purcell’s winningest  coach, Jim Conger.

But the football stadium or press box could be named in honor of Mike Wilson.

Conger coached for 13 seasons and won 100 football games with a winning percentage of 72.76 percent.

Wilson led the Dragons on the field for 12 seasons and won 98 games with a winning percentage of 69.50, including a State Runners-up team in 2004.

The third winningest Purcell head coach has only 75 victories.

That is Rick Clark, who has two wins more than fourth place coach Boney Matthews.

Wilson is certainly deserving of such an honor.

New Year’s Eve marked the end for another successful season for the Lights from the Heart holiday display at the Purcell City Lake.

Purcell Parks & Recreation Department Director John Blue said  there is no car counter but did know 52,000 mints were handed out.

A mint was given to each occupant in vehicles as they rolled through.

The display is beautiful and enjoyed by thousands of people every year.

Thanks to the city employees who work so hard on the display and a tip of the hat to all the organizations that volunteer to welcome visitors each night.

Well done to one and all.
