Purcell has started the 2025 diamond schedule 1-4.
Their victory was a beaut, an 18-4 run-rule victory at McLoud March 6.
Purcell pounded out 15 hits and had 15 RBIs, led by Brody Walkup who went 2-4 at the plate with three RBIs and scored a pair of runs.
Parker Page, Casey Billingsley and Deaken Dobbins all had two hits in the contest. Page had a home run in the contest and one of Dobbins two hits was a triple. Billingsley, Dobbins, Cooper Selman and Page all doubled in the game.
“Parker is hitting well early in the season. We hit the ball pretty well as a team,” head coach Cole Sharp said. “I was pleased overall the way we put the away.”
With the game knotted at one apiece, the Dragons ripped the game wide open in their half of the third inning when they exploded for 11 runs they scored six more in the top of the fifth to post the victory.
Walkup got the win on the hill with relief from Bryson Perkins and Preston Kane.
“Brody threw really well,” Sharp said of his sophomore hurler. “He attacked the zone early and often. Perkins did a good job for us coming in and Kane tossed 1/3 of an inning. I was pleased with the pitching as a team.
In their opening game with Chickasha, Purcell played good baseball but ended up on the short end of a 3-1 count.
Page got the start on the mound and went five innings striking out a pair of Chicks.
“Hitting wise, we faced one of the best pitchers in the state in the Bryan kid,” Sharp said. “He was tough to hit. Parker had a double in the fifth and Cooper Selman had our other hit.”
Purcell showed signs of life in the seventh putting runners in scoring position at second and third but ended up leaving them stranded.
“I was proud of the way we competed and played,” the coach said.
In extremely poor weather conditions March 4, Purcell against played the Chicks well but lost by a run, 12-11.
Starting pitcher Boston Knowles fanned four in the four innings he worked.
“Boston threw really well, especially for the conditions we played in,” Sharp said. “Deaken Dobbins came in to relieve Knowles and took the pitching loss.
“Deaken needs to be better with his control. A couple of wild pitches led to a couple of Chickasha runs. We also made a couple of mistakes in the field that cost us as well. You can’t make mistakes against Chickasha. They made us pay,” Sharp said.
Cash Cook led the offense in the Davis game lining a double and a home run while collecting a team-high three RBI. Perkins and Kash Knowles also both doubled in the game with Perkins knocking in a pair of runners.
Purcell traveled to Tuttle Monday and dropped an 11-1 contest.
Tuttle pitching limited the Dragon to four hits, one each by Cook, Boston Knowles, Walkup and Selman.
“Parker Page got the start and loss on the mound. I thought overall Parker did a great job attacking the zone and making them earn their bases. They are a really good hitting team and one of the top teams in 4A,” Sharp said.
“Our bats were quiet for the most part. “We got the bases loaded in the first inning but couldn’t push a run across. I thought we put pressure on them early but couldn’t put up runs.
“Overall, I was still pleased with the way we played. We just need to be better at the plate and have better at bats,” he concluded.
Purcell was to host the Tigers Tuesday. This weekend they will play in the Wayne/Wynnewood Tournament and play in the Southeast Shootout next Monday through Wednesday.
The Dragons open the Shootout on Monday at Idabel against Idabel.
They play Tuesday and Wednesday at Battiest first against Duncan and on Wednesday against Plainview.
