With a trio of treys and going 6-10 at the charity stripe, Purcell senior Haven Buchanan racked up 23 points in Purcell’s 47-40 home opening loss to Community Christian November 10.
Buchanan led all scorers in the contest.
The Dragons pulled within a bucket going into the fourth period but were out-scored in the final frame 13-8.
“Haven has had an outstanding start to our season, scoring a career-high 23 points and leading all scorers,” head coach Toney Cooper said.
“Her timely shots kept us competitive, although we struggled with our shooting and consistency on offense,” Cooper continued.
“We showed strong defensive moments but couldn’t contain a very good CCS team.
“I was pleased with our bench contributions, especially Halle Buchanan’s crucial rebounds and Lili Del Toro’s energizing spark,” the coach said.
“Freshman Kaylee Peoples also made positive plays,” Cooper said.
“We need to improve offensively and defensively, but I’m proud of our team’s determination. We were always in contention,” Cooper concluded.
Coach Matt Lohn’s Dragons played CCS even closer but eventually dropped a 44-41 decision to the Royals.
Kevin Resendiz and Brayden Tharp led the Dragons in scoring with 15 and 13 respectively.
Purcell was out-scored in the final quarter 12-5.
“We have to find a way to finish games,” Lohn said. “We are really close. We need to do better with the little things and control what we can control.”
Both the boys and girls were taking 1-3 records on the road to Comanche Tuesday night and are scheduled to play at Dibble Friday.
