Washington’s 41-6 dismantling of the Lindsay Leopards last Friday night for the District 2A-1-2 title was labeled as “the most complete performance of the year” by head coach Brad Beller.
Beller said from the standpoint of special teams, offense, defense, running the ball, throwing the ball, stopping the run and stopping the pass, “it was our best, most complete game of the season.”
The Warriors’ stingy defense limited Lindsay to 73 yards passing and 144 total yards in the district showdown contest.
“On the offensive side, Creed (Barrett) gets a lot of credit,” Beller said. “He came back after missing a couple of games and had a complete game. He was in control and outside of one drive ran the offense well.”
Barrett was 11-19 passing for 163 yards and three touchdowns.
The balanced offensive attack rushed for 160 yards and a trio of touchdowns.
“Creed was really efficient throwing the ball,” Beller said. “He, Josiah (Dickerson) and Javen (Hall) all did a great job. And, Case Alexander had a big night with four receptions for 82 yards and two touchdowns.”
Alexander also scored on a three yard carry in the second quarter.
“Jackson Mays had two receptions for 27 yards,” Beller noted. “Both of those were big receptions at big moments.”
The vaunted Warriors offense didn’t score on three series in the first half mainly due to penalties where they started behind the sticks with first and 20s.
Henry Mann was The Man on defense with a team-high 12 tackles and one quarterback sack.
Alexander also shined on the defensive side of the football amassing 10 tackles and also dropping the quarterback for a sack.
“Henry is a sophomore that is not playing like a sophomore,” the coach acclaimed. “He had a great game covering the pass and stopping the run from his outside linebacker position.”
Beller was quick to point out the outstanding play of his defensive linemen.
“Those guys don’t get a ton of headlines but they control the game,” Beller said of Lane Taylor, Hunter Sanders, Ricky Ramirez and Jax Mitchell.
“Those guys control the run game taking on double teams and fighting off blocks. I’m proud of them and the way they played.
“Same for our secondary of Kinser Scott, Dawson Thomas, Braeden Hitchinson and Kade Babcock,” the coach said. “Limiting their passing yards to 73 was tremendous.”
Up next will be the Chisholm Longhorns Friday night in the first round of the State Class 2A Playoffs.
Kickoff for the contest is set for 7 p.m.
The Longhorns, 6-4 on the season, finished fourth in what Beller calls “the deepest district in 2A-1.”
“They played Metro Christian closer in a non-district than the team that finished second in that district,” Beller said. “They are the best No. 4 team in the playoffs,” he continued. “They throw it around all over the place. Their receivers not only catch the ball but they make plays after the catch.”
The Longhorns are very multiple out of their 3-4 defense, Beller reported.
“We will have to identify coverages and just get a hat on a hat,” confirmed.
Warrior notes:
Head Coach Brad Beller nominated Henry Mann as the Defensive Player of the Week for his 12 tackles including a quarterback sack performance against Lindsay.
Hunter Sanders got the nod as the Defensive Lineman of the Week. He had six tackles including one tackle for a loss last Friday night.
Kingston Stringer was the nominee for Offensive Lineman of the Week. He graded out at 86 percent against the Leopards.
Beller nominated Creed Barrett as the Offensive Player of the Week. He completed 11-19 passes for 160 yards and three touchdowns against Lindsay.
