The Lexington Bulldogs will be in Chandler on Thursday for their first game of the Regional tournament. They play Perry at 1:30 p.m.
“We’ll have to play well and pitch well but I think it’s a good draw for us. Since it’s a four team regional we’ll have to have another pitcher step up. We’re playing well at the right time,” head coach Matt Dierking said.
Last week, the Bulldogs got in three games – two wins and a loss, despite the rainy weather.
In their second game with Davis last Tuesday, Lexington struggled to keep up with the Wolves’ offensive onslaught and lost 13-1.
Thursday’s game with Bridge Creek was a 5-2 win and Friday’s game with McLoud was a 4-3 win.
Bridge Creek
Sophomore James McMillan struck out eight batters and allowed just two runs (both earned) in Lexington’s 5-2 win over Bridge Creek.
“James pitched well and very efficiently. I think he had only 74 pitches going into the last inning.
“They scored on an error in the last inning, otherwise he would have had a shutout,” Dierking said.
The Bulldogs collected six hits, including two from Kaiden McRavin. Senior Ryan Johnson had a three-run homerun in the first inning to put them on the board.
McLoud
Cody Rollins had a walkoff single in the seventh inning to pick up the 4-3 win over McLoud on Friday.
The Redskins put up three runs in the top of the first inning and Lexington answered with two in the bottom of the first.
Then, both teams were scoreless for five and a half innings.
Lexington tied it up in the bottom of the seventh when Buddy Cormany grounded into a fielder’s choice to score one then Rollins had the walkoff single.
Colby Haynes was on the mound and struck out seven batters Kash Klupenger came on in relief and is credited for the win. He struck out four batters.
“Our pitching was good in this game. and we played good defense.”
The Bulldogs have won eight of their last 10 games. Their record heading into Regionals is 17-18.
