Wayne kicks off season

Lady Bulldogs get 42-40 win

Posted

The Wayne Lady Bulldogs started their season with a win over the Dibble Lady Demons, 42-40.

“We had first game jitters, about like I expected, but I was pleased with the whole team and that everyone contributed in one way or another,” head coach Bill Burnett said.

According to the coach, Dibble had a couple of big girls that presented a challenge.

“We bodied them up. Their best player had 15 points. In the second half, we went no-catch which made her work a lot harder. She only had one field goal in the second half.”

Senior Lorensa Martinez had 13 points. Six other Lady Bulldogs contributed, including eight each for McKenzie Fisher and Kaylee Madden and six for Haylee Durrence.

“Every point was valuable. It was all about who did the little things – who got you the ball, who got the rebound?”

The Lady Bulldogs hosted Velma Tuesday night. They play in the Comet Classic starting with a 1:40 p.m. game with Empire Thursday afternoon.

The Wayne Bulldogs faced Dibble to kick off their season and fell to the Demons, 46-45.

Wayne was down 13 points at halftime, but roared back in the second with a 20-5 run and a chance to win at the buzzer.

“We made defensive adjustments in the second half and started full court pressure which helped us to battle back,” first year head coach Jackson Embry said.

With six seconds to go in the game the Demons hit a three to take a one point lead. Then the Bulldogs had the shot they wanted, according to the coach, but it did not fall.

Wayne also missed 13 free throws in the game.

“We feel good getting the first game behind us. We have a tough schedule between now and Christmas and that will show us where we are as a team,” Embry said.

A run of tough games started Tuesday when Wayne hosted Class A No. 11 Velma-Alma. They will be in Velma for the Comet Classic starting Thursday. They play Davis at 12:20 p.m. for their first game.
