State Playoffs get underway for No. 1 Washington

Washington finished the regular season with an unblemished 10-0 record with their 35-0 shellacking of Lindsay on the road last Friday night.

The victory was Washington’s 40th win in a row, setting up a first round home playoff contest with the 6-4 Perry Maroons at 7 p.m. Friday at Reed Field.

“They are not your average four seed,” Warriors Head Coach Brad Beller says of the Maroons.

“They are the best No. 4 seed in the state because they play in the best district in the state. In their district are Millwood, Jones and Chisholm as the top three teams. OCS is a usual two deep playoff team and they finished fifth. It is a very tough and deep district.”

Beller reports the Maroons are very multiple on offense employing both double tight ends and trips utilizing multiple running backs.

“They have a very big and strong running back,” Beller said. “The guy has very good balance for as big as he is.

“On defense you can tell they are good wrestlers because they tackle well and have good leverage,” the coach said. “They base out of a 3-4 and mix their coverage between man-to-man and zone. It’s hard to tell which they are going to use because they are deceptive.”

Beller said the Warriors have to maintain and sustain their blocks on the offensive side of the ball and tackle well when they are on defense.

“We need to get their running back on the ground and play good coverage in the back end,” Beller said.

Washington’s defenses put the squeeze on Lindsay last week giving up just three yards passing.

“We made them one dimensional with their leading rusher gaining only 43 yards,” Beller said. “We did a good job of shutting them down. It was a total team effort.”

Tanner Olson led the tackling chart with seven stops. Kale Brakefield finished with six and the Warriors got five tackles each from Kash Guthmueller, Case Alexander and Dawson Thomas, who also intercepted a pass.

Hudson Howard put on quite a show at running back carrying 14 times for 163 yards and three touchdowns. Howard scampered in from 42 yards out, four and 24 behind the blocking of Trip Wilson, Lane Taylor, Kingston Stringer, Wyatt Phillips and Sam Cantrell.

“Overall, it was a very balanced performance,” Beller said. “Because of our run game our passing game was very efficient. Hudson Howard and the O line set the tone for the game. We really needed and wanted to focus on the run game. The line opened some big holes for Hudson to run through.”

Three different receivers, Mason Singletary, Case Alexander and Nate Roberts each stabbed three receptions off the arm of Creed Barrett, who was 9-12 for 128 yards and a touchdown to Case Alexander for 32 yards.

Lucas Witcher scored the final Warrior touchdown in the fourth period on a three yard plunge.Warrior notes:

Washington Head Coach Brad Beller nominated Hudson Howard as the Offensive Player of the Week. Howard gained 163 yards on 14 carries and scored a trio of rushing touchdowns.

Nominated as the Offensive Lineman of the Week was Lane Taylor, who graded out at 83 percent against the Leopards.

Tanner Olson was nominated as the Defensive Player of the Week. He had seven tackles.

Beller nominated Kane Lampkin as the Defensive Lineman of the Week. He finished with four tackles including one for a loss.
